With the way our army has to fight these days they can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. To much red tape and to many video cameras to fight a war the way is should be fought.

Our army is great in a stand up fight. But there would be no stand up fight here. Guerrilla warfare would be the name of the game if civil war came. Hit hard, run even harder.

And if there is an attempt to remove him from office illegally, it is the military's duty to defend him.

The military's duty is to defend The Constitution.

Not whatever President happens to be in office.

The military's duty is to the Constitution over anything else. The responsibility to "protect the President" as you keep wanting to put it is going to come down to who decides whether it's actually a coup (which, ps, "illegal coup" is pretty redundant) or a legal removal from office, and what their decision is.

And, regardless of all that, the overarching charge of duty is to defend the Constitution. Even in the event of a coup, they're still defending the Constitution rather than protecting the President.

ETA - it's an important distinction in words and, I think, a distinction that matters. When you start talking about "protecting a President" versus "support and defend the Constitution" you're taking an apolitical concept and skewing it into a political one.

You can mince words all day and night if you want, but the result is the same.
Yes the words "illegal coup" are redundant, so my mistake there.
It would depend on if someone in the military is part of the attempted coup, which is usually the case when it has happened in other countries, and how much of the military rank and file has chosen to be on the side of the coup.
My guess is that the part of the military that is not on the side of the coup would defend The Constitution AND the President.
Unless Trump does something unlawful that brings about the coup attempt, the majority of the military should be on his side.

A 3%er is a reference to the idea that during the American Revolution only 3% of the population took up arms and fought. It's basically a group that identifies with that narrative saying they'll be the few who rise up as "true patriots" to fight for the nation.

Those oaths sound like they were made by military or law enforcement who feel they might someday be ordered to do something.
