I know there would be repercussions but we're talking about balancing a budget and cutting back expenses. A big expense is corporate welfare and those guys already take in Billions in profit each year. I will always rail against anyone that receives welfare that doesn't need it. In the end a major reset is needed if we're actually going to tackle this national debt.

What a shame a program like "meals on Wheels" will be cut...but it should be an even deeper shame that a program like "Meals on Wheels" even has to exist. Yes a shame....people should be taking care of their parents, Churches should be providing for our elderly instead of depending on the Federal government to pay them to do so. After all it takes so much time and money to take a meal to someone...a shame that people must be bribed to ensure that an elderly person eats....but we can spend and raise over 2 billion between both parties for an election spent on advertising, extravagant parties, and bribes...we have no problems raising money for that nonsense so it should not a problem to pull some money out to support the programs you like without the Federal government being the only source.

It won't because Trump's budget is DOA...dead on arrival...due to Republican opposition. It's as if there are now three political parties in the US: Democrat, Republican, and Trump.

Trump knew this so it's not a budget that was created with exhaustive attention to detail. There would have been no point in going to all that effort when it has zero chance of passing congress pretty much no matter what he sent them. Still, I think he could have done a better job with crafting something that would have scored him more political points somehow or another.

Actually the budget was ENTIRELY designed to score political points, but alas only points for the only group he cares about. The Trump believers. It's just another example of how Trump thinks he is only President for the people who voted for him.

Who needs the humanities when you can just go and have a continuation of a war that never ended?.

As I said earlier in the thread, Meals-On-Wheels is often times a step down from Cat Food in taste.

I don't get it, how liberals and conservatives accuse one another of being on the government tit when we are all subsidized.

If the socialist mechanisms that keep you from living in the dark were discontinued, a lot of you, both left and right, would simply cease to exist.

It isn't each other we need to rise up against.

I agree...it is a very tiny budget in comparison to past budget examples. He is showing all how these lifetime politicians operate from both sides. I also believe and said earlier in the thread that it is a bit from his Art of the Deal...ask for the outrageous and settle for what you wanted and look like the great compromise...he wants to cut the budget and we need too so he sets them up with the stringent budget ever submitted and now watch what happens...popcorn

I guess it depends on where you come from as my Mother was a "Meals on Wheels" volunteer driver. The food was all prepared at her church by the ladies in the church and everyone enjoyed the meal together before they distributed them to those shut ins unable to provide for them selves.

The community outreach program which sponsored it also provided money (federal) to other programs besides the churches in the area to provide drivers and prepared foods. It takes volunteers and people that care for a program to be successful otherwise the President is right, the money is wasted for salaries for the community leadership and advertising programs when most churches would love to help with outreach volunteers but because so many people are stuck receiving federal dollars that they refuse churches help...after all...separation of church and state right ?

Actually, a church isn't allowed to feed the hungry UNLESS you take federal money.

If you try to buy your own food and cook it yourself, your church must either have, or install a commercial grade kitchen, complete with 3-chambered sinks and a separate sink for "employees" (volunteers) to wash their hands in. You need to get inspected 3 times in your first 6 months, and, depending on your jurisdiction, you may have to pay the health department to inspect you.

My church could not afford to install an over-head sprinkler system in our 100-year-old kitchen, for fire control. So we couldn't get certified as a commercial kitchen. The church was told they could not serve non-members more than once a year, without having a commercial kitchen (what about visitors to the church????)
Which is why we don't serve meals to the homeless.

We send them home with canned goods instead.

But it is that way at every turn when it comes to churches caring for the needy. Local bureaucrats are always threatened when the church does for free what the welfare workers are PAID to do; so they quickly shut down any program that looks like it might succeed.

My church started an after-school program, that had no religious content; it merely let the kids use our gymn, and offered free tutors so kids could finish their homework. Parents had to sign up for the program, so the church could take responsibility for the children until the parents picked them up.

The program was hugely popular, and the church had all adults supervised and background checked. The kids enjoyed getting their homework done before they went home for the day.

Once we got more than 50 kids enrolled, the school got itself a big shiny grant to set up its own after-school program, with paid staff. Then they said that churches could no longer give member kids a ride to their church, even when the parents had a signed statement listing the days when the kids were going to the church. Then all school clubs that met later in the evening, were moved to meeting directly after school....

So now, the only school program is the one with paid government employees. It is not well attended, because there is a crime and drug problem there.

Sounds about right but again I suppose it depends on where you live and what kinds of leadership there is. My Mothers church is large and well off so they do have a large commercial grade kitchen and they prepare food for the programs they participate in and they too are considered secular so they don't push their beliefs on anyone.

The Community Renewal group which is funded with federal funds available from the city is a program which the church ladies also participate in providing a safe place for kids after school and help with homework and generally keeping them busy, again secular in nature but really all volunteer, the federal dollars go to paying the Community Renewal Directors salary, whom is really not needed, but is a steeping stone for a lot of individuals to step into local politics.

All of these programs at one time were simply church people and other volunteers...and it has gotten out of hand as far as regulations controlling stupid things such as you described...it all comes down to politics as usual

Yes, Texas replaced Thomas Jefferson with capitalism in their schools, so think of how much damage the Republicans can do at the national level.

Some history needs to be corrected. Such as Lincoln was not out to stop slavery but to stop Southern states from making a profit off their goods to other countries. The man was going to deport all african american slaves,but Booth actually prevented it by killing him. Also Lincoln broke 11 laws prosecuting his war and should had been impeached.

Oh but that wont happen though. Because historians hate to rewrite their books,and lincoln is a sacred cow of the federal government.
