I also have a cat called sqeaky and its getting old too, its a small world.

I dread the day I have to make that choice. This might sound crazy but I want to be the one to do the deed and bury my cats, I want to be the one that they look at when they say goodbye.

Dammit OP now I've got something stuck in my eyes and they are watering. To qoute the Jedi code "there is no death, there is the force." And as long as you breathe squeeky will stay alive as a memory.

I know how you feel,I had to put two cats to sleep last june.I still
have one cat left but she has cancer and has been in remission for
three years.
Lately,my husband and I noticed that she needs help getting
up on the sofa, her appetite has slowed down.I don't know how much
longer we will have her.
Whatever decision you make, put what is best for the cat over your
feelings and needs.Good luck!

I have an 18 year old cat. He sleeps about 23 and a half hours a day so...yeah...it's hard to know what to do.. I mean, at what point does it just become 24 hours a day, permanently?

But, that half hour he is up, he's fairly agile, vocal and eats with enthusiasm. He seems happy. I brush him everyday since he doesn't seem to care about hygiene as much as he used to. I also put him on the deck for some fresh air and sunshine. And I tell him everyday that it's okay to stay or go, whichever he prefers, we'll take care of him.

If you are asking yourself, "Is it time?" Then the answer is, "Not yet." When it's time ... there aren't any questions.

Such a tough decision to make, but as my Vet told me, they WILL tell you when they are ready...both of my dogs did.

Because, you have been such a good friend, he does not understand why he is in pain.

If your cat has known nothing but love and care all of his life (and I know that you have loved him well and good) continue that love and do the tough thing - you will feel it from your pet when it is time to let go.

I honest to goodness am so sorry.

I (as most people) can understand where you're coming from. I'm not sure if people on here remember or read my post a few months back (last yr already) when I woke up to find my older German Sheppard gone. He passed in his sleep which honestly is for me the perfect way to go from my stand point, he was in some pain in the days leading up to it and the vets appointment was the day he woke up it was a horrible moment but I'm glad the decision was taken from me even though I was preparing for that decision if the vet said he was in alot of pain, he was fourteen years old. I'm not left with his sister, Midnight who will be fifteen this year (again people say WOW when they hear that apparently it's really old for a German Sheppard lol including some vets) she is slow up the stairs but other than that she barrels about like he's ten, we recently got a pair of huskies (one was a rescue that was found and is a bit of a handful but doing great) and we were given another a few months back when an elderly lady couldn't look after him and since those two new dogs have come around Midnight (older dog) runs after the puppy and chases him in the garden like she is young again.

Speaking to the vet, I admitted to having late nights not knowing when the time would come and the vet gave me some advice, she said "In the event that Midnight doesn't get an illness or develops cancer she will tell you when it's time. The moment she doesn't want to go for a walk, she doesn't eat or eats very little and just wants to be left alone, it's her way of saying: C'mon Dan (that's me) it's time to let me go" and I'm sticking to that. Midnight still loves her walks and like I said barrels after the puppies so I'm hoping she is really doing good and it's not just me thinking that but yh I think if the vet is right Midnight will tell me, so my advice (rather drawn out advice lol): is as long as your cat isn't showing signs of being in pain and eating well then be happy with her and spend some extra time and give her some extra treats.

(On a side note: If I get the chance before she goes I'm gonna spoil her with all the foods that I know she wants but can't have from Malteasers to Kebab (she loves the smell and I'll admit has had a piece or two in her life) and Ice cream etc. so whatever food your cat might like but never had or only had a little, go for it it'll help afterwards.

I let her go today. I held her for 10 minutes at the vet's while the sedative did it's thing. I feel really sad right now. I know I'll wake up tomorrow and think, oh ya, she's gone. I will always love that cat.

My sympathies ... it is never easy to say goodbye.

At least there is no pain or suffering , only peace.

Sorry to hear it mate. People will say all sorts of things about how they feel your pain and while it's probably true deep down it will feel like it doesn't matter that no one can understand it but Just remember the one important thing, one thing that no matter how you feel today or tomorrow and that thing is that what you did, you did not do for you but for your beloved cat. You didn't do it for selfish needs, you did it because you loved your pet...your friend more than any words could ever explain. I truly and honestly feel for you and hope that you remember that if your cat could send you a message I'm sure it's a thankful one because if there was pain before there isn't any more.

I am so sorry .....it's a hard choice to let go ,and hard to have to go through it too. When we lose one of our pets it is losing one of our family members . They love us with unconditional love and we love them too....always know that you gave her your love, and your heart... and you gave her quality of life . ...and she knew it and loved you back for it. ....I will say a prayer for her tonight , and I hope that she visits you in your dreams . ...
