A ROCKET hit the US embassy inside Baghdad's fortified Green Zone today, killing two people and wounding at least six, a diplomatic source said.
The rocket struck after dark on the eve of Iraq's elections (this morning AEDT).

An explosion could be heard across the city centre and sirens sounded in the Green Zone shortly after the blast.

Americans die in embassy blast

A ROCKET attack on the US embassy compound in Baghdad's Green Zone today killed two Americans and wounded four, an embassy spokesman said.
"It hit near the embassy building," Bob Callahan said.

"There are two dead and four who are wounded...all Americans."

Most of the US embassy's staff work in Saddam Hussein's former Republican Palace, a huge building inside the Green Zone.

An update on the story:

Sfgate
The rocket fell into the Embassy's compound, near the building itself in the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, according to the embassy official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A civilian and a Navy sailor, both assigned to the embassy, were killed in the rocket attack, a military official said, also on condition of anonymity.

Of the four injured Americans, two were military, one was a civilian and the fourth was as yet underdetermined, the military official said.

Fox News is saying they've already caught the three men who set off the rocket.

More details:

There are about 7 men captured in this attack. There was an arial probe that tracked where the rocket was fired from. This arial probe tracked the people back to a house while the military was watching. They stormed the house and arrested first 3 people, and then the rest.

Score 2 for terrorists, 7 for Iraqis.

Free Iraqis win this battle.

That's amazing. The description on FOX said that when the rocket discharged, it alerted a UAV. The UAV then zeroed in on the origin of the rocket, locating insergents entering two cars. The UAV followed the cars to a house, where ground forces were dispatched and apprehended seven suspects, five of which have tested positive for rocket residue.
on catching 'em!

More proof on just how important UAVs are going to be in the future of warfare
Just imagine if that UAV was armed with some hellfire missiles it could have just taken those cars out.

Less cost then a manned plane up there partoling with not threat of any human loss if the aircraft went down.

I don't understand...how the score goes?

Just a question...w'r the guy captured Iraqi????

Would be interesting to see you it was....this would show if they are ordinary people of Iraq or people from abroad.

My feeling is th'r Iraq pissed off with the situation.

So much for the peaceful elections that Iraqis are hopeful for. I am just waiting to see how democracy is going to do during these elections day.

I wonder how many more Innocent have to die for Bush rushing into everything, just to prove a point.

It most be nice to have so many lives in the palm of your hands at your disposition to used as it seems fit, as long is not a close relative the one that is to become a casualty of his quest.

I'm disgusted with some of the responses in this thread from those who support terrorists and the killing of innocents. One of you actually says "Proud to be a muslim". Is this the attitudes we should expect from a religion of "peace"? You are pathetic, and a strong argument for minimim age limits to join this board.

What world have you been living in? No-one expected the elections to be peaceful, but to your dismay, THEY WILL BE HELD.
:

I'm glad they caught those cowards quickly, and IMO they should be publicly beheaded as the polls open in a couple hours.
