Why the hell do we need to hear all about the scumbags of the planet? Do you think I care about some terrorist who has blown up 15 or more people? Are we meant to enjoy that? Come off it. They don't deserve a mention. They want to be on tv and they get rewarded because they thrive on it. It is total crap the bad news sells. It should not be the case. What good people do should be the top priority of the news. They jam so much horror and depressing news in so many minutes, it is like they are going for gold. I am sick of it. There are a number of people suffering from depression and all we need is good, happy things to watch and enjoy. That is just the start of my rant. Having faced another ban on GLP, I am not at all impressed.

A man before his time(see below). It's been this way before there was TV even. Now it's in hyper mode via the net and social media. It's more threatened than ever as their print, TV and cable channels are near death while holding onto the last vestiges of brainwashing.

This agenda in mainstream media to keep people stupid, docile and apathetic.

That's the media's job, to keep negative energy in the air so that those in power can feed off of it. Anything they report on you can be sure there is an agenda behind it.

Why does the media bash Trump constantly? Not because they don't like him but to keep his supporters pissed off at something. Why is Trump the president elect? To keep people that don't support him pissed off at something.

It's all to keep negative energy alive and well.

It's a good question. Who does decide what constitutes 'news' ?

Of course we need to know what's going on in the World but by concentrating on delivering bad news with hardly anything good to counterbalance it the media is irresponsible to say the least.

In the old days did editors find that more newspapers sold when there was a murder or disaster in the headlines? Did they give precedence to those stories to make money rather than have some sort of sinister agenda? Can the reader be blamed for the preponderance of doom and gloom being reported?

Perhaps we should all be doing our bit and not clicking on the reports of death and destruction we find on the internet. Maybe we could make more of an effort to bring positive stories to ATS?

Together we could help to create a market for the 'feel-good' stuff.

People need to be made aware that these things are happening ..... A warning

coming to a Mall, or venue, near you maybe sooner than you think?

It is total crap the bad news sells. It should not be the case.

*It should not be the case* but the sad fact is that *bad news* sells....

There are no poor newspaper proprietors.

There are a number of people suffering from depression and all we need is good, happy things to watch and enjoy. That is just the start of my rant

Do you really think that anyone suffering from depression is going to be

impressed or cured of it by reading all those good happy things that

everybody else is doing while they are so depressed?

Having faced another ban on GLP, I am not at all impressed.

That says it all

The old Journalists motto:
"If it bleeds, it leads!"

I agree whole-heartedly with your rant. This topic is a sort of double edged sword. On one hand, we like (possibly need) to stay informed of the happenings in the world. On the other, there is a LOT more positive stories that could be covered, and raise our collective mood out of the realm of depression and hopelessness. (I do suffer from manic depression)
The 'double edged sword' logic goes even further on this topic. For example, we constantly hear of the atrocities carried out by ISIS. Doesnt that news coverage further promote the fear and propaganda they wish to spread? In turn, isnt that going against what we, as citizens, are told to do to combat their ideology? Were not supposed to be scared, were not supposed to give them a platform for their rhetoric, but the media does it all the time right?

Now the other edge of the sword, What if a group came to this country promoting faith and unity through Islam? if we did not hear about these groups, If we did not hear about the horrors committed in the name of their "religion of peace", we may very well open a whole new playing field for them to do the disgusting things they do. (Some would state we already have, however that is a different topic).

I have not watched any news broadcast in over 6 months, and it has elevated my mood dramatically. I do read several papers (online format) everyday though. The difference is that when im reading a paper, I pick the stories i want to read. Watching a news broadcast, they put out what they want you to see. So I guess its a matter of if you want a choice in your news you or not.
At the end of the day, any MSM Corporation is a for profit business, which goes back to the opening line of this reply. Whether humans have a primitive blood lust, or its been programmed through years, and years of garbage news/propaganda is another topic as well. Theyll never give the people what they want, but theyll always give the people what sells.

Final fun fact: Television shows exist solely as a platform to sell advertising.

Apologies! I somehow missed your reply to the OP before i made my initial reply.

Maybe we could make more of an effort to bring positive stories to ATS?

I think thats a GREAT idea! Maybe PM a moderator about starting a new, 'Positive stories only' topic in the current events forum? I, for one, would be a regular reader. I find that when I am depressed or feel the walls closing in, that nothing snaps me out of it quicker then reading some stories about, (example only) a child who donates his tooth fairy money to a homeless shelter, or a kid from "the wrong side of the tracks" who turns his life around and in turn, helps others do the same.
Those stories are very uplifting and restore my faith in humanity.

I think it's a good idea, sad how some sub forums become only only outlets for negativity. That just may be due to assuming there is no where to place them.
Starting off, though may be a challenge due to the political climate, would be more members sharing uplifting stories and participating in them when shared instead of only starring and/or flagging-sometimes that doesn't even happen.

I think the media are too over the top in reporting certain issues. Yes we do need to know what is going on around us however, it would be great if the media didn't glorify specific crimes as they do. It does affect the human conscience to be bombarded with negative news. It would be more beneficial for society to learn about the good positive things that are occurring rather than concentrating on the negative. The media seem to get their kicks out of it the way they present it and it is just not good. It has got much worse as the years roll on. a reply to: eletheia
