I honestly do not know what she said at the awards show... dont really care to much, since in the past she has talked about people that vote republican as if they had something wrong with them...

When you say things like that in a public setting you are going to catch a lot of venom, just like Hillary with her basket of deplorables comment..

This seems to be a recurring theme with the progressive wing of democrats, now please notice Mike Rowe did not talk down to her, did not imply she was weird or wrong in her statement, and even invited her out to see the event as his guest to see if they could find common ground.

If the progressives would stop referring to those of us on the other sides as (insert ism here) and instead tried talking to us, a lot of the hate and divided nature of things today would evaporate almost immediately.

She said her heart was broken because the person soon to be occupying the highest position in the land openly mocked a disabled person.

Now, you can disagree with her - I would welcome differing opinions on that. What bothers me is when people on the right said that Streep should keep her mouth shut and stick to being an actress.

And if you are going to claim that no Republican has ever publicly stated that people who vote Democrat had something wrong with them... you haven't been reading ATS.

kay buddy...the Left and the Right are constantly pointing fingers at one another, be it behind closed doors or on a soap box.

Why is this so foreign to you..?

There are plenty of threads and posts that mock those on the Right - you should probably stick to those. Watching you awkwardly negotiate these types of threads is sad to witness...things are only gonna get worse around here. Time for an ATS break..?

He mocked a disabled person, and so did Meryl when she put down people who like sports...

Just kidding sports fans, only joking!

In the completely wrong venue. Because without that venue...no one would have listen to a word she said......she had a captive audience that was taking by surprise with her heartfelt speech of hate & division.a reply to: kaylaluv

And she was applauded, because they loved what she said. Her heartfelt speech was one of caring for the disabled among us.

It's an awards show for actors.....not a damn one of them...with her or against her...would be caught dead on camera not applauding. Their fake, plastic people who are so caught up in themselves, they expect the public to just " do as they do or their wrong". I mean applauding at that event , is damn near mandatory.a reply to: kaylaluv

Here is the reality of her situation... she is a well known actress... when you take the public pulpit you are going to catch flak much worse than normal people.

I support the first amendment, but the first does not protect you from blow back, it only protects your right to speak.

She is facing some blow back... if she does not like it, then do not get on that public pulpit.

As I said before, disagreeing with her is fine. It's the whole "she should keep her mouth shut about her political views" part that bothers me. She has a right to speak whenever, however, wherever she wants - just like the rest of us. Just because she has a public pulpit doesn't mean she doesn't have the right to use it - much like Mike Row.

I cannot speak for everyone, but my perception is that some are not giving her grief about what she said, but the venue in which she said it. What in any of that rant of hers had to do with the winning of an award for acting? That is a serious question. She was receiving an award for doing her job well...not for her personal political opinions or actions. In that context, you accept the award, thanking those you worked with and made possible your successful career that put you into that position. If she wanted to make a political speech about whatever, then she should have spent her own money to put together a presser for that purpose. Making her speech in that venue, which was paid for by advertisers and investors, may not be what they were paying for in giving her that award. Airtime costs money, and that money was not spent for her personal political views.

I don't give a furry rats tail what she believes at all. I really do not. She can rant on about anything if it is on her dime or in public. But, when at an awards event, and you are a recipient of one of those awards, it is disingenuous to spend others money on unrelated topics.

And I believe she deserved her time up there, which means she can use that time taking advantage of her 1st amendment right as she sees fit. They don't tell entertainers what they are only allowed to say when they're up there. They only give them a time limit, and they'll bleep out any profanities. Other than that, it's totally up to the individual how they will use that time.

What you may not realize is that Meryl has always been pretty political and many times chooses her projects based on the politics of the message - so, it really isn't totally out of line for her to speak on something politically while on the podium.

What's funny is I'd be willing to bet the big toe on my right foot that if Mike Rowe had ever won an award for anything and got up there to talk about something political - the conservatives would find no fault in that.

He didn't really set her straight. It's called a friendly debate.
