Anyone know the release date here in the USA?

I have no idea. But I read somewhere that Sony wasn't sure they were going to release the HD in America. Other than that I dont really know. Try doing a search on google. Or check Sony's PS2 website.

For a price about 250 $, including keyboard, mouse modem, a 40 Go harddrive and a linux pre-installed (I dont know what version). But it's not a sony official product...

There is the same thing existing also for sega dreamcast.

I dont know how advanced the X-Box linux kit is...

The X-Box is a breeze to mod. All you do is install a chip (some do not even require sodering), download a new OS from your PC, and install it on the X-Box. You then have a machine that will do everything MS envisioned it would do in the future, just you have it today. One tip, if you go online, MS knows that you moded your box and will ban you. But, hey, you can install a switch on the X-box so that it will appear to be an untouched box. The X-box is basically a gaming PC with an Nvidia card. They are easy to mod. Hmm... Maybe I can tell you how to copy your gave DVD's next.
