I'm not going to get into an argument about America's place in the world. For better or for worse, it's been earned.

Many nations have harbored, and still do, ambitions of that nature. My country is hardly unique in that.

I think you ought to explore Russias actions in attempting, and succeeding in large part, to secure it's place in the sun...

Oppression? Imperialism? Every power on Earth since the dawn of civilization has practiced those fine arts, please don't attempt to tell me otherwise. The one's who didn't weren't quick enough on the draw, not innocents.

True, you can't ignore the past.

After WWII and the defeat of Nazi Germany, the US had to delay war with Russia due to probability of failure. The development of nuclear arsenals, and the scientist who gave Russia the nuclear plans, delayed this action for decades. It has been a game of cat and mouse, it's an inevitability the US fights a conventional war with Russia. The only thing stopping full-scale war with Russia is that neither side has the capability to deflect a nuclear attack, other than the destruction of both sides. There is no amount of learning or study of history that will change it. Given enough time, either the US will be able to strike Russia without fear of reprisal, or vice versa.

An inevitability? Really?

Y'all need to get a grip. Seriously. If it didn't happen in the glory days of the Cold War in the 50's and 60's, much less the 80's, it isn't going to happen now.

Why the Hell would it? Too much to lose for all concerned.

As for it happening after WWII, Russia was, indeed, tough. The pre-eminent power on the globe, however, was the United States. Dispute it though you undoubtedly will.

There was no way for either side to nullify a nuclear attack or counter-attack back then.

Today may be a different story.

The MAD doctrine is the only thing preventing a nuclear war.

Until that time, it will be proxy wars, economic war, and propaganda campaigns.

There is really nothing to debate when it comes to American imperialism and the negative affects its foriegn policy has on humanity.

For better or for worse, it's been earned.

I was holding off on creating a thread about America imperialism, but I will do so in the new year. It's an important topic because:

To understand where we are today, and where we'll be tomorrow, one must understand where we were yesterday and how we got to that point. To ignore the mistakes, and learn from them, is to be doomed to repeat them.

I think you ought to explore Russias actions in attempting, and succeeding in large part, to secure it's place in the sun...

I posted a comment directly below your last comment that points out Russia's (and China's) attempt to find a place in the sun.

Yeah...I'm definitely going to hammer it home in that coming thread about American imperialism since you have confused ideology with actual geopolitics that has played out over the past few decades and is presently playing out. However, I do agree with you every power on Earth has attempted to rule the planet through such barbaric inhumane means such as oppression, exploitation, and killing.

Feel free to post it. Sounds interesting.

I might even opine--actually that's probably very likely
.

Whether you agree or disagree, it's of no matter as long as it's polite, I'll argue all day long...it's more fun if you don't agree, actually.

I believe I said, US came in late intending to share in the spoils of WWI. There were a lot like after all wars. Versaille treaty carved up Germany dividing the resource rich coal and industrial Ruhr between England and France whose industrialists enjoyed the benefits until Hitler took the Ruhr back.

Theres more like the Polish Corridor, the Sudetenland, Parts of Austria, blah blah, all of which besides huge "war reparations payments" were immense costs to Germany as punishment for firing the first shot.

US definitely wanted in on that, why they come into the war, at the end, after most of the fighting and dying was done and victory was certain.

You might benefit from a history channel series called Apocalypse, WWI. Best documentary series ever to be put out. In depth, no holds barred look at the War from a more truthful perspective. The enhanced digitized footage and analysis is eyeopening. Give yourself a real present for christmas.

And the only foreign armies to occupy European countries were Soviet and it was deeply resented.

"Were"? NATO forces occupy these countries, now. Shake off the Cold War propaganda and open your eyes.

People resent being occupied, everywhere.

You can spout all the "I love Putin" nonsense you like here and some people are clearly too dumb to read a goddam history BOOK (yes BOOK not Google) to know the truth. But most of us are not that stupid.

Just full of hate, obviously. The "goddam" history book most ignorant people were indoctrinated with in the west from kindergarten was written by the victors. There is more than one side to every story. Start looking a little deeper than Ronald Reagan, John Wayne and CNN. This was written for 'Mericans, but will suffice here, too.

A return to, if we ever really left, MAD. That's all, and I don't mean to sound factious when I say that, either. Mutually Assured Destruction worked--sort of. Yes, proxy wars raged around the world, and that sucks...but nuclear war did not, and that's something to celebrate.

Nothings changed, the weapons of MAD are still in place, enhanced even with plans to build a trillion $ more. There is a disconnect there between where the Cold war was declared 'over' and yet somehow still 'rages'.

Scenario one: Us 'invades' Vietnam, Soviets help defend Vietnam against US occupation, US loses.

Scenario two: Us invades Middle East, Russia helps Syria defend agains US ("Intervention"), US losing.

Nothing is changed.

You may want to paint the "Russians" as bullies and instigators but that changes the actual historical record, because in fact in just these two cases alone, the incursion, invasion, intervention (pick your propaganda), a clear violation of sovereignty and international law by the US came first and ended with the Russians defending the legit government.

WWI, US came in at the end so they could share in the spoils. Stalin stayed in Eastern Europe because the US didn't leave Western Europe, either. Said so. Stated that Eastern Europe would remain a buffer from now on to prevent what Hitler did ever happening again. Well they left and look what happened. Who occupies eastern Europe now? NATO.

Most Eastern European Countries are Free or as Free as can be, Not Russians though or other gobbled up countries under the influence of despot power. Russia is one of the few countries where the population is going down except for maybe the 10%
who cream all the spoils, 136th most corrupt country in the world I read somewhere today along with unbelievable # about testing numerous new weapon systems against the civilians of Syria..
You stay in your Russia maybe you are one of those 10% .. The Donald is talking about building up their nuclear arsenal as well ho ho ho and a merry Christmas to you to.. Just get on with your lives and try to do some good for a change. FFS

I'm not Russian "FFS". Nor a 'Murican warmonger, globalist, NWO, Republican, democrat, religious, nationalist wrapped in the flag zealot.

I'm a guldarn-longhair-barefoot-hippy protester. Anti war, anti establishment, ex-denizen of Plato's cave. I don't believe anything my gubment tells me thru the TV.

For some strange reason it seems, every hundred years or so the west goes crazy and has to attack Russia.

Are we building a weapon that can take out satellites and U.S. equipment in space?
Who is doing that? Let me think. Oh. Putin.

All sides are doing that.

Yesterday I read some where that Obama has started to use the old cold war storage facilities in the Netherlands, to fill them up with tanks again.

Jeezus, you're right. For 'defense', of course. (wink, wink)

You keep using that word, occupied. I don't think it means, what you think it means. Eastern europeans love NATO, that's why time after time, after time they elect pro-NATO politicians to govern them, while there are anti-NATO and pro-Russian parties to choose from. You can't understand what it's like to be truly occupied for hundreds of years, that's why you don't understand why would people voluntarily want to be part of NATO.

Amazing, and they gave Obama a Nobel peace prize right before he started his presidency!

His presidency ends with the rekindling of the cold war and each side, the US and Russia, both talking about building up their nuclear arsenals.

Does that make any sense?
That’s the world going backwards

Also, supposedly he and Trump are buddies...then why is he talking like this

Something doesn’t add up here…something doesn’t make sense at all.

Are these crazy M____ F_____’s TRYING TO INCITE A WWIII?

Think about it. Is this what they want?

Is this their plan to exterminate more than half the human race?

Think about this

Obama the Nobel peace prize recipient liberal progressive amps up the cold war just in time for crazy Trump who pretends to be Putin’s friend

Both sides Trump and now Putin are expressing their desire to ramp up their nuclear arsenals

WHY

Aren’t Trump and Putin suppose to be friends

Something doesn’t add up folks

My conspiracy bones are starting to smell a great big rat.

And the Rat is?

As is becoming usual, you're revising history to suit your opinion. Nothing wrong with that exactly...

Ignoring everything else that doesn't suit that opinion.

The Versailles Treaty was nothing more, and on this we agree, France and Great Britain attempting to punish Germany, not just for WWI, but for the previous half-century and more of conflict. Thus setting the stage for WW2...

The US came in late, and actually should have stayed out, and probably would have save for this. The rest, as they say, was history. To call it stupid on Germany's part would be an understatement.
