The Mercator projection was created back in 1596 and is indeed flawed. In 1974 another projection (Gall-Peters) was presented which and although it's not perfect it's still a better fit.

Check out countries sizes by square miles and compare them to their size on the map, there are lot of discrepancies.

the world is a spheroid - and ANY attempt to image its surface features in 2d is doomed to distortion errors or and unusable mess

the mercator projection has serious flaws - but despite the hysteria - no one actually uses it for anything critical

the " new messiah " of the peters projection is " better " - but still flawed - would you prefere to have a hand or foot amputated ? thats the " improvement " that peters gives you

there is no " perfect " mapping system - the only wqy to get a truely accurate representation is a classic globe

If the world really were flat, them great circle routes wouldnt work for one thing, Newton's work wouldn't make sense for another and Eratosthenes experiment wouldn't work either.

its worse than that - try navigating on an alledged " flat earth " - a magnetic compass = fooking useless on any journey of any distance over water

to fly across the atlantic you would need a set of correction tables - that amazingly dont exist

and the greater the difference in latutude between your start and end point - the worse it gets

I once flew Philadelphia > London > Joburg ( > Lusaka, irrelevantly). It was easy to feel the truth behind this second map then, even if I wasn't consciously aware of what I was experiencing. Unless the plane somehow slowed to half speed upon crossing the Mediterranean, crossing the entirety of Europe, and even the Atlantic itself, felt like a jaunty stroll compared to the hours longs hike of the rest of the North > South trip over Afrika. Regardless of how one chooses to orient and project one's map, she is more vast by far than anything else on the globe outside of the Pacific Ocean.

This is a great cartographer. This map might solve your problem. His maps are outstanding. Deny ignorance are ignore the flat earth movement.

The TV show "The West Wing" already (back in 2001) discussed the subject of the Gall-Peters Projection v. the Mercator Projection (YouTube of scene below). Their explanation was a bit simplistic, such as why Greenland's size was distoirted, but it's still a fun clip.




Personally, I always thought that this sort of world map (the Winkel Tripel Projection -- image below) with the edges curved seems pretty good. When the pole areas are stretched out to make a rectangular map, the width of the land masses near the poles also gets artificially stretched and enlarged. There is still some distortion due to stretching with Winkel Tripel Projection, but that distortion is not as drastic as the Mercator Projection.

The Gall-Peters seems to be similar to the Winkel tripel, but in a rectangular format, so north and south directions are always straight up and straight down on Gall-Peters, but north and south directions on Winkel tripel follow a curve (except in the middle of the map), and are more curved as you get farther toward the left and right edges of the map.
