Rabbis question if spouses may live together if marriage contract burnt in Israeli wildfire

It appears to me someone is trying to capitalize on the recent fires in Israel under the guise of religious tradition. Greed knows no bounds it appears.

Having suffered through the trauma of infernos that consumed their homes and possessions, families who lost everything in the recent fires around the country are facing one more hurdle – this one from rabbinic quarters.

The municipal chief rabbi of Zichron Ya’acov, who is also in charge of marriage licenses in Haifa, issued a statement saying a man and wife whose marriage contract was destroyed in the fires could not live under the same roof until a new contract had been drawn up.

The national chief rabbis quickly intervened, however, ruling that any couple who had lost their ketuba in the fire could continue to live together but should have a replacement marriage contract drawn up.

Well that seems like a real kick to the nuts. At least other Rabbis had a little more courtesy, decency, and respect for the situation. Fanatics and zealots clearly come in all affiliations. I imagine a marriage license in Israel should not be too expensive.

I would say if this is what they're so worried about they have it way too good. Ask the people of Aleppo how important their marriage papers are at the moment. Could lend some perspective.

well, most of the city outside of the occupied portion of East Aleppo is continuing on with their daily life fairly unimpeded. But that besides the point. I just know this Rabbi is simply trying to extort money from disadvantaged people during their time of crisis. Nothing but a parasitic vulture if you ask me. Thankfully he is just an isolated loon from the looks of it.

I would guess he is orthodox. They are very law oriented.

Wait a moment I don't get it, if you get married is always a record keeping of the licenses. it doesn't matter if the person loses their personal license in their lifetime, I don't even have mine.

This is so archaic is funny, or like somebody said, it most be about the money.

He is one of Gods chosen people! So BACK OFF!

In fact that was the reason cited by the other rabbi's who were detracting his statement. They do keep those records. However, even they stated that they should still get another license as soon as possible. Hopefully it is as simple as going back to the one who officiated the marriage and just getting a copy.
