I was watching an episode of the sci-fi series Magicians and it mentioned the Bechdel test as part of a dream sequence. I never heard of it before. Too funny:

en.wikipedia.org...

This is a total thought virus. Every movie I now watch with a scene with 2 women I will not be able to control myself seeing if it passes the test.

The episode of Magicians I was watching just passed the Bechdel test!

I use the Bechdel test with most movies I watch for the first time. Soooo few things have passed the test. I'm a big Alison Bechdel fan but I think anybody can appreciate this concept.

The golden girls, and Roseanne ,and All in the Family all pass this test! There has not been a sitcom worth watching since the early 90's in my completely unbiased, non fuddy duddy, totally in touch with what's hip these days,opinion..

I think I like it because it's very intelligent and something I've never heard before. It made me think there's probably a lot of men writing scripts with a certain point of view about female characters. So at first I thought practically nothing would pass the test. But the numbers were better than I imagined:

"The website bechdeltest.com is a user-edited database of some 6,500 films classified by whether or not they pass the test, with the added requirement that the women must be named characters. As of April 2015, it listed 58% of these films as passing all three of the test's requirements, 10% as failing one, 22% as failing two, and 10% as failing all three.[34]"

I thought this was interesting too:

"According to a 2014 study by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, in 120 films made worldwide from 2010 to 2013, only 31% of named characters were female, and 23% of the films had a female protagonist or co-protagonist. 7% of directors were women.[5] Another study looking at the 700 top‐grossing films from 2007 to 2014 found that only 30% of the speaking characters were female.[6] In a 2016 analysis of screenplays of 2,005 commercially successful films, Hanah Anderson and Matt Daniels found that in 82% of the films, men had two of the top three speaking roles, while a woman had the most dialogue in only 22% of films"

I apologize to all the women for this little non-sequitor. But "meathead" just made me think of one the funniest bits I've ever seen on television. Here's "Archie Bunker's Editorial on Gun Control":

"just arm your passengers and he ain't going to take out no rod" Lol!!!

The show was groundbreaking, the humor was cutting, and the cast chemistry was a pleasure to watch.

Archie was one of those characters.. It wasn't that you love that you hate him..

It was that you hated that you loved him..

Sorry about the off topic..you started it

When our friends get together our wives go in the other room and drink wine while the men drink beer and watch football. What I love about is after a few drinks the girls really start laughing together. I love hearing all the women laugh. It cracks me up. Sometimes my wife tells what they were laughing about. I have to admit, what the girls are laughing at was beyond my imagination. Girls and wine are a dangerous combination!

Interesting measurement. I think its something to consider, at least for psychologist and sociologists.

But i also think that life is more fully enjoyed when we put down the measurements and just embrace the experiences.

Another odd/funny thing is the disproportionate casting of people with physical or psychological problems, lgbt people, redheaded people, people with cleft chins, beautiful people, or really unusual looking people.

Basically, there are very few depictions of the average person.

I mean, I know they're being unrealistic or unusual for entertainment's sake, but it's still pretty annoying -- especially when its more than one of the above unusual things all rolled into one, like Ian Gallagher from Shameless.

Ian Gallegher:
Bipolar
Redheaded
Cleft chinned
Gay
Handsome
Comes from an extremely broken home

Someone should make a movie with just average people doing regular stuff, only we get to hear their normal thoughts -- it would blow people's minds -- a front seat to someone else experiencing normal life.
