Law Firm Under Federal Investigation For Straw Donations

A Boston law firm is under federal criminal investigation for routing donations to various candidates through some kind of reimbursement scheme that gives money back to employees after donations were made.

Looks like all (or most) donations were to Democrats.

One that stands out is U.S. senator Elizabeth Warren.

This article outlines some reluctance to return the bad money.

Federal prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into a Boston law firm after a bombshell Boston Globe Spotlight story last month highlighted how the firm was doling out bonuses to reimburse employees for political contributions made to Democratic candidates.

One of the politicians they funded most extensively was their home state Senator, Elizabeth Warren. While many Democrats, including Maggie Hassan in New Hampshire and Russ Feingold in Wisconsin, returned the money they had received from this firm immediately, Warren waited a full five days until ultimately returning the $130,000 given to her by the company’s partners, despite independent groups calling on her to give the money back in the hours after the story broke.

Warren’s reluctance to immediately return this tainted money speaks to her overwhelming hypocrisy. While she consistently rails against money in politics and criticizes her opponents on the issue, she initially refused to return dirty campaign cash until public pressure mounted to a point where it was her only option.

Now that there is a federal investigation into this Boston-based firm, Warren should take a leading role in ensuring that they are brought to justice for their unethical behavior. However, Warren is always one to look out for her friends and will likely run far away from this situation that shows the true character of her donors, instead of working with federal officials.

Warren, eh? Did they pay her in wampum?

I wonder how common these straw donations really are?
Trump needs to drain this part of the swamp too.

I remember seeing videos of people who get elected spending the majority of their time trying to raise money for their re-election. Without the spider webs of donations they would dry up and die; why would anyone spend millions of dollars to get a job that pays thousands unless there was a gravy train waiting for them ?..... donations that are given for favors rendered ? You can watch a politician who gets in office and is worth some small fraction of what they have when they leave office...the money is certainly not made by a government salary.

Maybe term limits really is the way to go... I do hope Trump can make a dent into the crony capitalist system we have now.. He is going to need some really big pumps with 24 hour guards if he is to succeed though IMO.

A google search for "Thornton Law Firm" site:fec.gov gives three pages of results, I haven't had a chance to look through all of them yet, but here are a couple of interesting ones:
