Today I received a phone call from a representative of a large organisation wanting to know if I was satisfied with their recent service.
Now, phone calls are none too easy for me due to breathing difficulties - think of Malcolm in the Middle's little friend Stevie but about ten times
worse - and my struggles were pretty apparent to the caller.
So, at one point in the conversation after I'd said something perfectly ordinary she said 'Aw, bless' in that way that's generally reserved for
toddlers, the elderly or the decrepit.
I am now an 'Aw, bless' and I can't even be cross about it because it's actually amused me. And, to her credit, the company representative tried
especially hard to sound sincere when she wished me a good evening at the end of the call.
I've noticed that sometimes - people on the phone try harder to sound as if they mean it when they wish me a good day although, I can tell, some of
them feel a bit awkward. They might be thinking it's inappropriate because I'm unlikely to enjoy my day what with being sick.
But I appreciate them trying. It's good of them. A little kindness really does go a long way
