The Michigan police officer was suspended for driving his off duty pick up with a confederate flag by a group of anti-Trump protestors. Of course an internal investigation is in process.

You just can't write this stuff.

What do you think ATSer's?

A northern Michigan police officer has been suspended with pay after he was seen off-duty driving a pickup truck bearing a Confederate flag around a group protesting Republican Donald Trump’s election as president.

Officer Michael Peters’ suspension was announced Sunday by Traverse City police Chief Jeff O’Brien, who earlier said an internal investigation will start Monday to see whether Peters broke any departmental rules.

“He is not working as a police officer,” O’Brien told the Traverse City Record-Eagle (http://(link tracking not allowed)/2euIuE5 ). “I do not condone his actions.”

O’Brien confirmed that Peters was in a photo taken from Friday’s rally. The newspaper could not reach Peters for comment, and The Associated Press was unable to find a telephone number for Peters.

The Confederate battle flag is seen by many people as a symbol of hatred and intimidation of African-Americans following the U.S. Civil War and the freeing of blacks from slavery.

The flag was flown from the rear bed of a pickup near a “Love Trumps Hate” rally in the city. The truck was then parked near the rally where the driver was seen drinking a beer.

O’Brien said the behavior was intimidating and not a reflection of the police department’s mission, according to the newspaper.

“We will get through this,” O’Brien said. “The community will get through this.”

There have been numerous reports of threats, intimidation and racially charged violence around the country since Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s presidential election.

I heard there was a controversy in some States (or maybe in the whole nation ?) to have the Confederate flag forbidden. Is it actually unlawful to wave it? Do most people in America really think it's only a racist legacy and nothing more?

Seems like over the last 4 years the confederate flag has become a problem. Is there something that happened or is just the media coverage that is pushing this?

Most public service jobs have a code of conduct. He probably broke that code.

If I'm not mistaken, it all started when some nutjob shot people around in a Black church, waving that flag...

After the Charleston Massacre (in the church) there were some major protests because the state captiol building flew the flag. While some claim the flag represents southern heritage, many see the flag a symbol of racial oppression. Perhaps it's a flag of sedition.

If you are a true American as you claim, you wouldn't be caught dead with that flag.

A true American would fight and die for your right to wave that or any flag. It is not for the government to dictate what you hold important. Yes, some people use the rebel flag to show hate, but others use it to show heritage. The flag itself will never be the problem, only what is in the heart of the one who displays it.

Over where I live, if they catch you flying the flag of Mexico, you get a pat on the back for being inclusive.

Southerners are just as American as anyone from Maine.
We speak a different language but were still Americans.
Right chall?

They used the race card to try and ban the stars and bars, but IMO it is about restricting southern pride and trying to hold back the idea that the south will rise again. If a new alliance of southern states occurred and they used a different flag, they would try to ban that one too. Can't have them southern rebels and their sympathizers getting all uppity can we?

I live in maine, I occasionally see someone driving a truck with that flag along side the us flag.
It's not my bag, but they can do what they want.

Meanwhile I'll snicker because it's always the stereotypical huge beat up truck with 18+ inches of lift and oversized tires being propelled by a sickly engine with a broken exhaust

I live in Indiana, and it's not unusual at all to see Confederate flags. It doesn't mean someone is racist anymore than wearing a BLM shirt. Right?
