ATSB investigating unlisted baggage container on aircraft

This is scary. The Australian Transportation Safety Board is investigating after ground crews discovered a baggage container in the hold of a Jetstar A320 that was not listed on the manifest.

Not much info is out yet, but the aircraft was being unloaded in Sydney when it was found. A report is due out by February.

Wow we give the airlines a great deal more credit than I thought...one would assume that this happens now and then..

I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard about it happening, including the seven years I worked with the FAA at an airport.

We won't know what was in the container until February?? Why so long?

No, we won't know how it was loaded without being on the manifest until February. More details will probably come out in the next couple weeks.

Ahh, okay.

Most propably the loading-master forgot to scan the container as it was being loaded, or a computer-glitch caused the san not to be uploaded to the main system

No matter how it happened it's a scary occurrence. Even if there was nothing in it that's dangerous, the manifest is how weight and balance is figured out. Drop a container and it changes the CG calculations.

I'm not fear mongering. This is scary that it was loaded without being on the manifest. Accidents can and have been caused by CG problems, and this is a CG issue. It could also easily be used to smuggle something onto the plane without the crew knowing. The odds against that are high, but it's a definite possibility.

Could a paperwork error cause this or is this a human failure only issue?

Also are airlines tested in this manner or do they restrict the security tests to the humans only lines?

This was a human failure.

They occasionally run tests in bags that are run through the checked baggage checks, but they're bags owned by the overseeing agency, not a passenger. They won't ever run a test with a container like this because it's a big safety issue.
