More than four years since the Bayou Corne sinkhole appeared, Assumption Parish officials declared on Friday that the once growing, burping, oily swampland hole that made worldwide headlines had settled down enough to no longer pose a risk to the public.

Parish officials completely lifted the remaining voluntary evacuation orders in last parts of the Bayou Corne community where the few remaining residents had remained, saying risk from instability and seeping, flammable natural gas released in the sinkhole’s formation have been mitigated.

"Through the preponderance of evidence, the area has been deemed no longer at risk due to the sinkhole and gas associated with its creation," parish officials said in a statement.

So how about some decent news for a change? Good stories don't tend to go over well here, but I don't care. This is worth reporting as a follow up to the tremendous attention this story got back then. Hearing this news after all the mayhem caused by this sinkhole is very good indeed, especially for the residents who can now return to their homes.

And if you read the article, it appears Texas Brine may have not been at fault after all (cough). The state appears to be alleviating TB from further monitoring in the near future as well.

But if I know anything about the earth, it is that it is very unpredictable. What appears safe today can change in an instant. And apparently, now they have discovered an ancient volcano off the Lousiana coast. With the huge amount of methane that the sinkhole and surrounding areas were producing, (and possibly still are)- I don't know if the earth is finished there yet. I guess only time will tell. But in the meantime, rejoice for the poor people who went through this terrible ordeal and had to evacuate fearing being blown to bits. They can now finally return!
