Saturday, in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Obama administration will re-engage with Russia, as well as several other countries, in the hope of finding a way forward in Syria, now in its sixth year of a war that has left 500,000 people dead and 6.6 million internally displaced by the violence, according to the U.N.

In a wide-ranging interview with CBS News, Vitaly Churkin, Russia's U.N. ambassador and current president of the Security Council, said the sticking point in cease-fire negotiations is the U.S.'snability to separate the web of moderate opposition groups from terrorist organizations like Nusra Front, a former al Qaeda affiliate.

It's nice to see good news in the WW3 forum. It's looking like the "cooler heads will prevail" theory is on the way to being correct.

The next pertinent question may be whether the upcoming Clinton administration will handle Syria differently. All indications are that that's the case. That's the elephant in the room many don't want to discuss.

How about predictions? What will come of these new talks?

My prediction is that nothing substantial will come from these talks.

Meaning the situation for the terrorists in Eastern Aleppo is dire and they want another ceasefire (complete with a breaking of the encirclement) so the NATO vultures can have their Saudi and Qatari friends ship them some more weapons and supplies.

600 terrorists from Eastern Aleppo surrendered their weapons to the Government in exchange for an amnesty, with others expected to do the same, meanwhile the ones that continue to fight lose skirmish after skirmish, losing more and more territory. Things aren't looking good for them.

A terrorist? If these so called terrorists from other countries paid to be there and fight as all of you terrorist pushers say why would they give up their weapons. They could just go back to their respective countries of origin.

What I'm getting from that is the syrian born rebels did this. To go back to their families. Makes far more sense than mercs turning over their weapons......

I never claimed that the entirety of the Anti-Syrian forces were foreign mercenaries. There are certainly a decent amount of them around though.

These fine upstanding gentlemen make up the majority of the "rebels" in fighting in Aleppo at the moment. They're a rather open Islamist Jihadist group, and are openly allied with the Al-Qaeda connected Al-Nusra front (they renamed themselves, I forgot the new name).

Incidentally the Free Syrian Army sides with Al-Nusra but strangely they don't like to advertise that fact. Probably want to hang on to the self-proclaimed "moderate" title.

No offense, well maybe some, but seriously you have been so obsessed with the WW3 thing that no one can take anything you post seriously.

I'm glad you now realize that WW3 was never going to happen, maybe now that forum will be less spammed.

US and Russia 'will go to war' unless proxy Syria conflict resolved, Turkey warns

That opinion trumps anything on this forum. I never insinuated that WW3 wouldn't happen over Syria. I just insinuated the opposite. I believe it's already started.

As to no one taking my posts seriously, if people are using the genetic fallacy to judge the merits of arguments, I don't care about their opinions of me.

You linked me to your own thread, as if I don't follow global news. I do.

You are a sensationalist.

Is the Turkish Prime Minister also a sensationalist?

What about the Russian Foreign and Defence Ministries?

Or the Clinton campaign with their plans for a "no fly zone" that specifically targets Syrian and Russian planes?

Yes indeed he is.

What about the Russian Foreign and Defence Ministries?

What about Putin's stance?

Or the Clinton campaign with their plans for a "no fly zone" that specifically targets Syrian and Russian planes?

This you actually have a valid point on. However, it will not result in WW3

He won't consider the words of the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister because I started a thread about what he said. That's not even the genetic fallacy. That's the genetic fallacy by proxy. I'm mystified.

As am I with your overly obsessive rhetoric of a WW3.

YOU are the one that chooses to leave your own thread when rational discussion happens.

You are claiming to know who is right and who is wrong by your own declarations alone. Do you think that's rational?

How about the following? I imagine we can agree that Russia agrees with the opinions of Assad expressed in the article linked below. How is that view condusive to a peaceful conclusion to the current U.S./Russia conflict?

Assad: Syria is part of Washington's prime goal for global hegemony

If Assad is replaced, the only thing Russia cares about is their naval port. That LITERALLY is all Russia cares about. They will sign on to the pipeline deal in a heartbeat once it includes their own interests not being affected.

We saw this same thing in Ukraine. Russia will defend their global extension, but it will be minimal.

I will bet some dollars that part of Syria in the next 3-5 years will become Russian territory.

Stop with the Russian push to WW3, it doesn't exist.

*Stop linking your own threads, it makes you look REALLY uninformed.

Of course I'm not stopping until the issue is resolved. I find it hilarious that you acted like the crisis was over because talks were announced then you admitted you were concerned about Clinton's effect on the situation. Comical.

I just brought up a huge issue in my last post, and you ignored it completely. You continue to offer claims with no sources. I don't think anyone could take you seriously without any sources.

Listen, (is that an oxymoron?) Russia has no interest in dealing with the US. I have indeed followed relations on a regular basis, simply because I felt the thing you predict is imminent now, 3 years ago. It won't happen.

I don't need sources when reality comes into play. You need to calm down and realize there are 2 options for WW3

Option A) everyone dies fast from nukes
Option B) everyone dies slowly from nukes

There will not be a WW3 scenario because of subs. If it ever went hot 15 minutes would destroy Earth as we know it. There is no safeguarding, there is no unaffected areas, there is only MAD.

Ya you think everything is super cut and dried dontcha.

You have no idea what SYRIA is all about.

And it WILL lead to WW3, and it will be a far different and less MAD war than you think.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sounds more realistic. Some people in this thread are acting like resuming talks equals automatic success. That's just wishful thinking, and I think Merkel knows a lot more about what's going on than anyone posting on ATS. Who can be so certain that it's different this time?

Merkel said: "The much more important thing would be, how we can stop it all and move on to a political process?"

She noted that talks between U.S. and Russia are resuming, "but all these talks unfortunately haven't in the recent past led to a permanent cease-fire."

ETA: I just found the following article featuring far more pessimistic talk from the people directly involved:

Syria: US, Russia, regional powers hold talks on conflict

The analysis in the following video is inline with what I predicted in the original post of this thread.

The overriding prediction from the video below: "The positions are set and nothing will change."

Here is how the crisis will end, and you are free to quote me on this.

Syria is a testing ground, as long as the Russian naval port remains untouched, Russia will more and more work with the US, and actually give them Syria.

If any aggression towards the naval port is exerted, we might see some conflict between the two nations. Nothing will go nuclear. No WW3 will happen. The annual drill involving millions of Russians is simply to keep Putin and Medvedev in absolute power.
