The alleged al-Qaeda frontman in Iraq, the Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has apparently issued a statement condemning democracy in general, in particular attacking it as an American tool to counter Islam. The statement, an internet recording, also threatens the Iraqi elections, and anyone who takes part in them. Here is the article from CNN.

www.cnn.com
(CNN) -- An Internet recording claiming to be from wanted terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi condemned democracy as "the big American lie" on Sunday and said participants in Iraq's January 30 election are enemies of Islam.

"We have declared a bitter war against democracy and all those who seek to enact it," said the speaker in the 35-minute message.

"Democracy is also based on the right to choose your religion," he said, and that is "against the rule of God."

This should make an interesting addition to the greatest hits collection of terrorist propaganda. This is very good (or bad) timing from them, coming on the heels of President Bush's inauguration speech, in which the President clearly stated his beliefs that the United States is at War with the enemies of Freedom and Democracy - looks like we have confirmation from the enemy themselves. As for his talk of democracy giving one the right to choose religion, and it thus being against religion...does this not contradict a lot about Islam? The whole 'no compulsion' deal that Islam, and most other peaceful religions proclaim? This should not sit well with some in the Islamic world...then again, I might be wrong, and this, like any other tape, would be a successful rallying cry nevertheless.

I'm pretty sure suicide bombs in the name of Islam don't sit well with most of the Islamic world.

Al Qaeda, or whoever is claiming to be them, probably doesn't really give a damn anymore.
