As patriotic as i am as an Australian my favourite road trip was in America . The trip started in Los Angeles where we met up with friends we met in
Woomera Australia . The trip was taken over three and a half weeks in a RV that was around 44 foot from memory and we went from Tijuana up to the
Canadian border in middle America (North Dakota) then across to Spokane Washington . I guess at this point i could point out all the awesome places
and scenery we visited but i will concentrate on our brushes with the law and looking back we were quite lucky to get away with what we did . Brush
number one San Diego . Well we get to the border crossing into Tijuana and Geoffs brother who lived in San Diego informs us we might not be able to go
over because we dont have a visa for Mexico . No biggie just look like an American tourist and walk across , All was good . Well as it turns out if
you dont have a temporary exit visa the people at the re-entry checkpoint really should not let you back in . We lucked out and the lady said she
would cut us a break and fake stamped our passport and said walk and dont look back . Day 3 and first brush . Day four we are driven around and came
to a dockyard where the Exon Valdez was moored Well there was a policeman asleep in his car at the gates and we ignored the sign promising us fines
and jail . Well we start taking pictures and up he comes all lit up on the car and demands to know why we were there . Turned out he was near
retirement and liked to scare the crap out of tourists , it worked . Day 4 the most scary brush . We went to the naval base to shop at the AAFCANS as
Geoff was in the Air force . Well a couple of navy guys said we can get a tour of an aircraft carrier and lets face it who wouldn't want to do that .
As it turns out the directions were less than accurate and we found ourselves face to face with a very angry marine with a very aggressive posture .
Seems we had ventured into a sensitive area . Luckily his superior officer came out and sorted things out . We were told how to leave and not deviate
. Like we would . Well at this time you would expect we would have learnt our lesson . Well we were travelling from Whitefish Montana to Spokane and
decide to go into Canada for a couple of days . Well when booking the plane tickets we were told that you dont need a visa to travel from the US to
Canada and back as travel between commonwealth nations requires no visa . Apparently this was wrong . The border guard was to say the least very
aggressive once again . Well after listening to his rants and threats for a couple of minutes i just said " you Canadians still got the #s because we
kicked your ass at the last Commonwealth games . It would be fair to say he looked a little stunned but then broke into laughter and gave us a
temporary pass for three days . Once again a dilemma , an entry visa but no exit visa but all was good as the American side had watched all this and
just let us through , myself and the wife just hid down the back as we re-entered . Well thats the major run ins and there we lessor things especially
for myself try to get into the bigger AAFCANS Sites . Oh and the highlight of the trip . We did the Vegas , Hoover dam / Disney /Grand Canyon thingies
but Glacier national park was freaking awesome . Its not a long drive but for someone who comes from a pretty much flat country it was mind blowing .
Icould write for 3 pages on the great places we visited , we drove through 11 states and never once after Anaheim stayed within 20 miles of a tourist
attraction so got to see the real America and it being not long after the first crocodile Dundee movie scored quite a few drinks for just talking .
Loved the trip but after going to Asia straight afterwards i was so happy to see the Australian mainland under the plane .
