Star Trek : Happy 50th Anniversary

50 years ago this month saw the birth of a groundbreaking new show on American TV , Star Trek was so groundbreaking that not many people understood it and after just three series and 79 episodes the show was cancelled , Star Trek was so far ahead of its time that it took until the 70s for people to catch on to what was probably the greatest TV series ever created and over the years it achieved the cult status it enjoys today.

As a child growing up in the 70s Star Trek inspired me to think of the possibilities of the great unknown , the other planets in our Galaxy and the peoples that lived on them , it was the gateway that sparked my life long interest in the final frontier.

Below is the first part of 7 bite size videos that explore the history of the original series.

The show that has inspired the future - that's one hell of a legacy!

You can have Star Wars, I've a been a life long Trekkie. Not to say Star Wars aren't good movies, but I was born in '64 and have always wanted to go 'Out There" and Star Trek played a huge role in that. It sparked a love of Science Fiction that hangs on to this day and that they named the first space shuttle the Enterprise, actually brought tears to my eyes when she launched. Most of the cast have died and we'll never hear, "I'm givin' her all she's got Captain!" in that Scottish brogue and "Live Long and Prosper" with the Vulcan "V" is firmly established in history.
I rattle on and hopefully got my point across that I've always loved Star Trek, but, "Dammit Jim, I'm a Doctor not a Writer".

I know someone will come along and say that the Enterprise was Not the first shuttle, Columbia was the first to be in space, the Enterprise was the first built and the first to be launched in test flights, from the back of a jetliner.
I was almost 13 and it was broadcast on TV.

50 years, wow. I dunno, I remember seeing the show in reruns in the 70s for the first time as a spud, all the bright colored uniforms and sets, The cool space battles and the crew tossing themselves from side to side with the usual acting "Extras" in the background going in the opposite direction to stay in shot as long as possible.

My favorite episodes were when they battled the Romulans in a futuristic throw back to WW-II submarines warfare movies, Then there was the Doomsday machine, that was another great one, If you listen to the soundtrack clearly Steven Spielberg based the JAWS theme on.

Never mind that whomever was on an away mission and was wearing the dreaded "Red" shirt, we knew who was going to get it.

Omg!! I love Star Trek..But I like some of the newer episodes, the ones with the Borg! They are The worst of species 5618.

Meh, I was always more of a Gilligan's Island fan myself. Never even seen a whole episode of Star Trek.

I am certainly a lifeling Trekkie. When I was about 4 and it was in re runs, my mother said I would throw a terrible fit unless I was allowed to stay up and watch it, it was in reruns by then,

Since I am moving to an apartment soon, with a heavy heart, I just disposed of all of the recorded VHS tapes that had every episode of every series. (I must admit I kept a set of the movies where the sides of the covers make a design when lined up together). My NIB action figures and ships will be taken from my cold, dead hands though! LOL

Borg were not defeated..they suffered huge losses but created a truce with species 5618 and came out of battle victorious!

Then they broke the treaty and tried to assimilate species 5618.. which was a no go. Eventually 5618 ended the hostility between them and 8472.

jeez louise. I'm aware of the story, seen it many times. Defeated doesn't mean extinct /end of species. Means they lost the battle/ even war. If that's the case the Germans were never defeated and we are still at war.

It was during this time that the Federation starship Voyager also chanced upon Species 8472. After a disastrous initial encounter and gathering more information, the ship's crew came to believe that the species intended to destroy not only the Borg, but all life in the galaxy. Captain Kathryn Janeway decided to form an alliance with the Borg to stop Species 8472 and ensure her ship would get beyond Borg space. Armed with warheads containing modified nanoprobes capable of destroying the ships used by the invaders, Voyager entered fluidic space and destroyed several bio-ships there, along with many more after returning to normal space. The encounter frightened Species 8472, and they retreated to fluidic space. (VOY: "Scorpion", "Scorpion, Part II", "Prey") It was only through this desperate alliance that both Voyager and the Borg managed to save themselves from destruction at the xenophobic species' hands.

Not that it matters in the slightest but I say the war borg vs species 8472, species 9472 won. Borg couldn't adapt and had no chance of winning without the intervention of starfleet. I would say it's a new war when a new party is introduced. ( technicalities so it doesn't even matter).

I would say the Germans won the war against the french. Without the intervention of Europe the french would have fallen. Like I say doesn't matter at all, just my interpretation of what a war/battle is.
