A Danish intelligence officer and four Danish military police face charges of abusing and mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners last year. The charges include both verbal and physical abuse, and negligence over the space of three months in 2004. The intelligence officer, Captain Annemette Hommel has stated that the charges stem from a misunderstanding with Palestinian translators who objected to her interrogation methods.

Capt Hommel, 37, who was ordered to return home from Iraq before her tour of duty ended, said she had done nothing wrong.

Last year, she said the allegations stemmed from a misunderstanding with the Palestinian translators working at the camp, who had objected to her interrogation techniques.

Jesper Helsoe, commander of the Danish armed forces, told Danish radio on Friday: "I will be the first person to apologise if the military has made mistakes, but the trial now has to take place. No one has been convicted yet."

This will do nothing to help the image of the coalition prior to the election(s), as i feel that after the Abu Ghraib scandal, Iraqis will have the same opinion of any foreign soldier who is charged with abuse whether they are guilty or not.

Not for nothing, and i hate if when people try to 'balance' thee sort of reports but, since the bush adminstration is supposedly guilty of war crimes and negligence and either commanding this abuse or allowing it to happen, isn't the danish government equally responsible for this set of abuses?

Doesn't that make the bush administration as violent and criminal as the Danish government? You know, those evil insidious Danes?

Nygdan, I don't understand where you stand in relation to the alleged blame and the allegation that all members of the coalition are to subject to the Bush administration. All i see is a contradiction in your post.

Each member country are responsible for the monitoring the behavior of their troops.

Typical liberal response. Explain bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior.

The prime reason for abuse is human nature, you will find rotten apples in every basket, from every country, the extend and the scale of the abuse however is often dependant on how much this culture is "overlooked" or even supported by senior officers.

In the case of Abu Ghraib, there was worldwide perception (also considering the regime in Gitmo Bay) that these interrogation techniques were having support from Rumsfeld and probably would still be going on if it werent for those idiots that need to capture their heroic acts on film....

Nygdan of course. I really don't know if he/she is liberal, but this

sounds like a liberal response.

Er? I don't think that the bush admin is more responsible for danish troops than the danish government, if I understand you correctly.

All i see is a contradiction in your post.

Oh?

Each member country are responsible for the monitoring the behavior of their troops.

See, when the americans brutalized the prisoners they were responsible for keeping safe, lots of people said, 'well, this is the fault of bush, he's a meanie, and probably ordered it, or at least allowed it to happen. Rumsfeld should step down because of this' and the like. And there is some validity to that arguement.

So, if that follows, then shouldn't the danish governmental oversight on the military also step down? And shouldn' the danish executives also step down, or similarly be called fascists and criminals and be tried in world courts?

I was reluctant to make that argument, because so often I see bigots cry about not being tolerated, or people justify radical right wing bias because of radical left wing bias. But I think the point still stands. Isn't the Danish government just as responsible for its troops as the US government is for its own?

Nygdan of course. I really don't know if he/she is liberal

Bwa hahahaha!. Oh man, thats a good one!

hey waitaminute, does this sound like a 'liberal' response

Nygdan, we will see after the Danish government pass judgement in relation to these charges.

Update: Danish troops deny abuse charges.

A Danish military intelligence officer and four military police sergeants have denied abusing 11 prisoners while they were based in southern Iraq.
The trial in Denmark heard that Capt Annemette Hommel forced prisoners to kneel during lengthy interrogations and refused to give them food and water.
