Esperanza Emily Spalding[2] (born October 18, 1984)[3] is an American jazz bassist, cellist, singer, and songwriter. Spalding was raised in Portland, Oregon and was a musical prodigy, playing violin in the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at age five. She was later both self-taught and -trained on a number of instruments, including guitar and bass. Her proficiency earned her scholarships to Portland State University and the Berklee College of Music.

By the time Spalding was five, she had taught herself to play the violin and was playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon.[12] Spalding stayed with the group until she was 15, and left as concertmaster.[12] Due to a lengthy childhood illness, Spalding spent much of her elementary school years being homeschooled,[12] but also attended King Elementary School in northeast Portland.[9] During this time, she also found the opportunity to pick up instruction in music by listening to her mother's college teacher instructor, who instructed her mother in guitar.[14] According to Spalding, when she was about eight, her mother briefly studied jazz guitar in college. Spalding says: "Going with her to her class, I would sit under the piano. Then I would come home and I would be playing her stuff that her teacher had been playing."[14] Spalding also played oboe and clarinet before discovering the double bass in high school.[12][16] She sings in English, Spanish and Portuguese

curious as to what people will say about her in 20 years?

she definitely has that old cabaret style feel to it.
i could definitely see her entertaining people like bugsy and sinatra while the waitresses walk around and hand out packs of cigarettes.
she would have been a huge star back in the day.
people are just not into this type of music.

a few years back she won a best new artist grammy(as well she should have). she beat out mumford, drake, and the beebs. of course the beebs fans threw a fit online talked # to her in whatever media was in at the time cause beebs was more famous than her so he should have one.

she is in concert in kent at the end of october. tickets only $35 but of course i cant go. as usual it is on a sunday and it is an hour away from my house and does not start till 7.
have a daughter in preschool and have to keep to a schedule.

major bummer
