Iraq police fear string of attacks

A series of bombings and suicide attacks are being planned to disrupt the Iraq elections this month.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Intelligence sources estimate 150 car bombings and 250 suicide attacks are planned ahead of Iraq elections at the end of the month.

A top Iraqi police official told CNN Thursday the information came to light during interrogations of recently-detained insurgents who said targets of the attacks would include election centers and other locations, without being specific.


If they have this much information, they may know when and where these attacks are going to occur. That may mean many of them can be stopped ahead of time. Or this could be a ploy to keep people afraid and away from the polls.

Had they done some advance planning, the security forces could have made the voting sites fairly safe. A simple placement of jersey barriers to divert all vehicles away from the polls, for example, plus explosive sniffing dogs to detect suicide bombers. There's still time to do some of this, but time is running short.
