I usually have a general pattern, but after that, I may get a completely different idea which way to go with it, depending on what time of day I do
it. Seriously. Shadow and light and the way they change, give me ideas, so I add, subtract, tweak, curl, curve, etc....... Some of my carvings look
better when the light hits them in a certain way. Like the butterfly in my thread, you can see the wingtip curl, because of the way the light makes a
shadow in the curl. That's when you see a detail that you couldn't really see before, because the angle of the light picks out highlights.
What the original pattern looks like and the finished product may be entirely different.
