Columbia crew saw new atmospheric phenomenon

It was posted in New Scientist in breaking news section, which make me smell something suspicious:

A new atmospheric phenomenon was caught on video by the crew of the space shuttle Columbia just days before the shuttle broke apart, new findings suggest.
Astronauts relayed the video to NASA in real-time during their 16-day flight. But the agency did not release the full data to researchers until several months after the mission's tragic end on 1 February 2003. All seven crewmembers were killed when the shuttle exploded while re-entering the atmosphere.
Yoav Yair of the Open University in Ra'anana, Israel, and colleagues spent more than a year analysing the video, which was originally taken to study atmospheric dust. But a single frame of the video - representing just 33 milliseconds - shows a mysterious reddish glow in the night sky on 20 January 2003
"I'm not sure what we saw," says Yair. "I just know it wasn't something we were used to seeing - it was something extraordinary." The glow occurred about 150 kilometres above the ocean near Madagascar and does not appear to be linked with thunderstorms.
That contrasts sharply with other ephemeral events at similar altitudes, which glimmer into being when electrical current travels upward from lightning clouds at altitudes of about 10 km. Called sprites and elves, these events take the shape of jellyfish, downward-pointing carrots, or doughnuts, and tend to occur within a horizontal distance of 70 km from lightning.

What do you mean? I think they're just excited about a possible new phenomenon that has been discovered and they're breaking the news on it. That's all...

Quite interesting reading and i wouldn't be so quick to condem it.How fast it happened could just be the reason it's been unnoticed all this while.

Spooky...could this be evidence of ETs? Maybe tney saw too much.

What? It's something that took 33 milliseconds to elapse. That's nearly no time at all. How could it relate to something extraterrestrial?

c'mon -to be SO excited about something which took 33 milisecons and it is ONLY new phenomenon, that " shows the astronauts didn't die for nothing - some science was achieved,"

It must be something significant -my question is WHAT?

maybe it was some kind of aimed testing for their weather stuff? maybe a new beam weapon?

Its a bit strange that the crew just happend to be over that specific area when the 'glow' appeared for as brief as it did. What makes me think bad thoughts is its speed in appearing and disapearing.

I really dont see much evidence here to point towards extra-terrestrials. There is alot we dont know about atmospheric effects and electronic storms, this is probably another one we don't yet know about or one that is just a theory.

I'm not saying the "glow" was of extraterrestial origin. I don't know who "they" are and frankly I'm not sure if this is important right now. Something is happaning out of ordinary, more and more things which are hmn, let's say unusuall. I'm an obserwer, conclusions are not yet ready to be made....

And whyc can't that be it, just because you can't see yourself
being excited over something that you might consider to be
unexciting, does'nt mean a person who studies that field would
not be.

There are alot of science stories that excite me, that most
people don't even consider to be noteworthy.

Clearly this was a space based telepathetic weapon being used to influence the crew to intentionally kill themselves on reentry. That is the only logical conclusion one can arrive at, given the available data. And for the record, I like cheese.

Otherwise... cool.

Could be a video glitch caused by an electrical discharge or something.. Or maybe its sulfur in the air being burned by lightning?
