The ruddy brackish sky
Awakes to a twisted metal dawn
Dust blows cold and dreary
The wind stinks stale, decay.
What have we done?
A tepid breeze scalds my exposed skin
I take potassium iodide,
For the radiation exposure.
I drink my dirty water.
What have we done?
Who could have survived
This brutal collapse
Without losing their humanity
In the struggle for survival.
What have we done?
The ruins of yesteryear
Beckon me with iron flecked nostalgia.
Things I once took for granted
Have all turned to dust.
What have we done?
A never-ending landscape
Of wholesale carnage
Megadeaths do not do justice
The bombs were our true God.
What have we done?
Mutually assured destruction
But what has it all lead up to?
I shoulder my rifle and strap on my pack
Nowhere is safe for long.
What have we done?
Bandits and marauders
Roam the heaving ruins
Wild curs search for anything that moves
Survival is the only goal.
What have we done?
Our world has turned to rust.
