Iraqi Syrian Catholic Archbishop Kidnapped (from ATSNN)

The Iraqi Syrian-Catholic Archbishop of Mosul has been kidnapped by the iraqi resistance. The Vatican has demanded his release.

"We have received news of the kidnapping of the ... Archbishop of Mosul, Basile Georges Casmoussa," Chief Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told Reuters.
"The Holy See deplores this act of terrorism in the firmest manner and demands that the worthy pastor is swiftly freed unharmed to continue to carry out his ministry."
Casmoussa was kidnapped by gunmen in two cars in the northern al-Majmoua al-Thaqafiya district of Iraq's third largest city soon after 5 p.m. (0900 EST), a local Christian official said.

The Vatican has taken a pacifistic path on the entire terror war and the iraq situation in particular. The kidnapping of a bishop is an illustration of the pointlessness of the insurgency. Its quite apparent that the people who did this are only interested in promoting havoc, not sovereignty.
I also find it interesting because the Vice President of Iraq under Saddam, Tariq Aziz, was also a Catholic. The Church even sent envoys to him before the war.
Additionally its interesting because I think that this Syrian Catholic church is one of the many 'Eastern' churches that either lost contact with european christianity or the papacy in particulary but recently (recently in historical terms anyway) rejoined the papacy. It also reminds us that non-muslims are notsubjected to extermination in regular, even very religious, muslim societies. These jihadis and mujahideners are very much extremists.
