Metal Storm is only one type of projectile launcher. Nah that's just Aussies playing with fire!
What I am talking about it the separation of Area Denial Weapons in 3 parts: Sensors, Actuators and Logic
Logic can be a very advanced system to gather data from sensors, classify potential targets and steer actuators into targeting a specific enemy. In
traditional mines instead these 3 parts are in the same casing. Modern warfare allows to scatter sensors to form networked sensing devices, to
position actuators in key spots and to hide the logic into a safe location. This is not so much because the logic is expensive, rather that's to
guarantee maximum effectiveness to the whole system/network because the enemy can't spot the logical unit and can't destroy it. Sensors can be rather
cheap like a webcam or a scatterable microphone. Actuators are actual weapons dispensing projectiles (Mortar or GL) or detonating remote charges.
Logic can range from complex expensive systems similar to IBM Synapse to very cheap calculators like an Arduino or Raspberri Pi. If one sensor is
destroyed, others can take over. If one actuators is destroyed another can take over. All plug and play into the network, all unmanned. Logic can be
replaced effortlessly to control a varying and dynamic set of sensors and actuators. Any platform will do. Farm animals, trees, walls, windows, cars,
anything can hold the logic or the sensor. Actuators are a bit more difficult to disguise, because it is harder to disguise a mortar, but not
impossible.
These weapons with electronic technology on them, will soon become the biggest nightmare to any colonialist attempting to invade anywhere. In the past
NATO has killed anything that moves ...
Now they will deal with the worst of all enemies. NOTHING! There will be insurgency without insurgents.
NATO has put enormous efforts to prevent these technologies from spreading. Maybe not as much effort as for Nuclear Weapons, but still quite a lot. As
a matter of fact an attempted NATO occupation or "prolonged stay" in Afghanistan might lead to Chinese and Russian electronics manufacturers to earn
monstrous amount of money in these types of new weapons. Up to 10 years ago, IEDs were the terror weapon ... wait to see what's next ...
