Authorities in the far western Chinese region of Xinjiang gave a seven-year prison sentence to an ethnic Uighur man for watching what reports claim was a politically "sensitive" film. According to Radio Free Asia, officials claimed the man, identified as Eli Yasin, a resident of Chaghraq township in Aksu prefecture, had watched a film on Muslim migration and was possibly "planning to go abroad 'to wage jihad.'" Uighurs, a predominantly Muslim Turkic minority, are the majority population in Xinjiang and have long complained of discrimination and marginalization by the Chinese state.
www.washingtonpost.com... This prison sentence is a disgrace, and another way the Chinese govt.use for suppression of it's citizens. The population of Xinjiang are basic uneducated Muslim people with a simple lifestyle. This is the same control method used by the Chinese that they implemented in Tibet.

Considering we have ewayy more people in prison than they do this is a moot point.

They probably laugh equally as hard when they see we lock people away for life for having a natural growing plant on them

Their government probably tells them we are the real communist look at how many people as have in prison

We are the laughing stock of the world with our hypocrisy

They put drug traffickers to death. China is not all that pot friendly unless you're a Westerner from what I've read.

Chinese confirmation on drugs policy notwithstanding, onequstion does make a valid point about the USA having THE largest prison population, per capita, of any nation on Earth...which most anyone ought to agree is such a tangible irony considering the motto 'Land of the free'.

Free to obey the rules?

Free to sow sacks and stamp license plates?

Although it has to be said, in the US's defense that their recent liberal stance on pot in many of the states, is moving closer to the goal of personal liberty, so it's going in the right direction at least.

As far as the OP topic, 7 years is a long time for watching a film...perhaps they want to make sure the Muslims there don't get motivated to become a problem for China in the same way ISIS and other radical Muslim groups are in the world at the moment.

There seems to be mention of which film it was, so it's hard to comment on this.

But let's remember there are certain books even, that in the west result in an automatic jail sentence if you even download them, never mind read them.

I won't mention the names of these books, but they are not pornography of any type.
