The stinger missile is a small infared sensing man portable air defense system (MANPADs). It has a small rocket motor and and an infared sensor that tracks the heat emitted by an aircraft's engine.

You can use it by joing the Army of any US supplied country, You can avoid it by either staying out of it's range (above few thousand feet elevation), or releasing flares to confuse it's guidance system.

From: Stinger Missile Threat to Airlines

Small heat seeking missiles that can be fired from the shoulder by one man is a huge threat to the safety of passengers on U.S. airlines. It is one of the biggest secrets the airline industry does not want you to know. It does not matter how much airport security is implemented, airlines will always be vulnerable to a "Stinger" missile attack while the plane is taking off or landing. In fact, the New York Kennedy Airport crashes of both TWA Flight 800 and the most recent AA Flight 587 may have been caused by an easily available Stinger missile.

A Stinger missile is deadly to passenger airlines as they take off or land. They are small, lightweight and portable and can be easily hidden inside a car or a van. They have heat sensors in the tip and a computer that guides them straight to an airline's engines. They can shoot down an airline as high as 11, 500 feet and are lighting fast at Mach 2.0 or twice the speed of sound. An airline has no chance when a Stinger missile is aimed at it. The pilot would not even see the missile coming and would only react when it hits the engine or an area nearby. The tip of the Stinger missile can be equipped with various types of explosives but just the impact of the missile is enough to bring down a plane. The pilot will hear a thud when the missile hits and people on the ground will hear the same thing and observe a small fireball at the impact point. This exactly what was observed just before the crashes of TWA 800 and AA 587.

You can avoid it by not flying in an airplane. Or shoot flares and pray...

I just don’t get it... The Stinger doesn’t have a HE warhead so how could it take down a milt-engine airliner when struck only in the engine? I could see if the wing ripped off from the violent jolts but it would most likely hit the exhaust port and at most cause the engine to disconnect form the pylon.

The stinger when confronted with multiple heat sources will home in on the largest "mass". On a 747 that is the center fuel tank.

Flares only confuse the irfrared tracker..........

From: that article again

The government is pushing the idea that possibly a "flock of ducks" hit the plane.

Or it could have been ducks... Why use remote controlled ducks when you can use a Stinger instead?

In a day and age such as this, why would you ask these questions on a public discussion board ?

Are you just curious... or do you have other plans....

Uhh, actually it does:
STINGER MISSILE FACTS

Explosives - 2.2 pounds, impact fuze (explodes on contact with target).

stingers use a fragmenting shaped charge warhead. As hits the plain it will punch though the skin of the crafts wing then it will explode releasing all its explosive force inside a closed container that is full of gas........

first thing that happens is the outer skin of the wing is blown off around the impact point. making the wing produce much less lift. This makes a stress point at the now gaping hole in the wing. the supports in this area are damaged are now starting to bend or buckle. Also the odds that fragmants take out parts if not all of the controll surfaces on that wing are also high.

Second the fuel tanks in the wing will be leaking badly if not just poring out in the effected area. Odds of fire are high at this point. If a fire does not happen then the plain is now unbalanced even more because now 1 or more of the hit wings tanks are now empty leaving the fuel in the other wing to drag the heavyer wing down butting more stress on the damaged wing and its is forced up.

Third if the engine is taken out and is ripped from the aircraft it will take even more of the plains structure with it. Weaking the plain even more.

pick of a airliner getting a none engine wing hit far out on the wing.

I know what flares do... I'm just curious if the Stinger has the advanced seeker to decipher the CFT from other sources... And once you spoof one you don’t have top worry about it going after an a fuel tanks as it would certainly go after the engines first.

And about it disrupting airflow, there have been airliners that have flown with only 1 engine as the other has came off the pylon... I can see if the wing, control surface, critical lines (electronic/control) or even the fuel lines where ruptured but a Stinger will most likely go after the exhaust can of the engines leaving the rest of the aircraft intact. And no, a 2.2 lb warhead isn’t a heavy warhead if pointed towards the exhaust can. Now if it where radar guided and hit the fuselage then even a .5 lb warhead could destroy the airframe from the vibration and distortion ripples, however, the Stinger is IR guided…

Just a little fact, a plane doesn't violently dicompress when a puncture is made, even a fairly big hole isn't enough, you need atleast a heavy shape charge to cause this, but ofcourse, the explosion would cause vibrations in the airframe as suggested earlier that could cause alot of damage.

Could a Stinger hit an airliner which is 20.000ft up? or is the missile not powerful enough? it can travel up to 8km which is aproximently 26.000ft...but I doubt it can travel that all the way up...due to gravitational pull, how HIGH could a stinger go?

Nah, it wouldn’t have the fuel to go strait up... Its maximum range is probably exploited on something that it closing in on the MANPADs or a helo that is under ~angles 5 or so...
You know like how A2A missiles have a max range only on closing targets that are under its launch altitude.

Well, atleast I can feel relatively safe 30.000ft up....no idiots with stingers hitting me any day soon

OH mannnn..I made a typo...DEcompress...not DIcompress
lol

Jet engines are rather delicate pieces of equipment with hundreds of hot parts moving at high speeds. The main idea for the Stinger is to disturb the balance of that engine. When jet engines are damaged they tend to fail catastrophically (meaning they blow up). The damage done when an engine comes apart makes the damage done by the missile seem small.
Other things to remember is that a jet engine has other components attached to it. Things like, hydraulic pumps and electric generators. Lose hydraulic pressure and there go your flight controls. Lose your generators and you lose things like your radios, radar, flight computers, CRT displays (think glass cockpit) and other important items.
In the late 1980's a United DC-10 had its tail mounted engine come apart because of a defect in a titanium cast turbine wheel. This caused the turbine blades to sever the hydraulic lines to the elevators and rudder. Only the skill of the flight crew prevented it from becoming a total disaster. They actually steered the aircraft by changing the power in the wing mounted engines. They almost pulled off a miracle and landed the plane but lost it on final and went off the runway into a corn field. As it was the majority of people survived. There is a video some where showing the landing with the plane going end over end.

Given above.

how i can use it?

Go into a military using it. Any other way and you're simply going to deserve your fate.

how can avoid it?

Various counter-measures of course. To be honest though, I doubt many of us will routinely face the threat of an incoming Stinger missile, so no worries mate...
