Bacteria found in Bulgarian mountain, can change the world of medicine

The bacteria are isolated from natural habitats (Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria) and identified as members of the group Sphaerotilus-Leptothrix.

Vitosha Mountain, which rises above the capital Sofia, is the locality where Bulgarian and Japanese scientists discovered a bacteria named Leptothrix, which can be used for the restoration of disrupted neural connections, in prosthetics and in the creation of an artificial retina. Professor Ivan Nedkov from the Institute of Economics with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, announced that a project is under way for the cultivation of the bacteria in an artificial medium. In order for the bacteria to be successfully isolated, scientists should recreate the conditions of its natural habitat.

Well, that is great news if accurate, but there is not much data to go on in the article to which you have linked.

I await more on this with great anticipation.

I am very skeptical on this announcement. Basically they havent got it out of the petri dish, yet the claims are being pronounced.

Too early unless you are looking for investors I think.

As far as I can see, this is true. The bacteria has papers written about it since at least 1969. Virginia Polytechnic does have some. It is apparently in short supply, that is why finding it and cultivating it is important.

If they havent managed to tame it by now.....I doubt ill live to see anything concrete come of it...

That's the part which makes me suspicious about this.
After 40 years you would have thought they would have found scientific use for this already, but it seems it might actually be a dead-end they just want to use as a funding funnel.

Unfortunately, research like this is sometimes used as an excuse to justify continued funding. It might just be a carrot being dangled.

I can't find much information in the news sources about the find. What I find is mostly written in Bulgarian.

and if Big Pharma, and in fact all of the medical industries can't find a way to patent it, so they are the only ones to make a killing off of it and it cost thousands of dollars, there will be nothing come from or out about it.
