Conservatives always oppress people- always. It continues today with voter suppression, attacks on abortion and birth control, social security, unions, retirements, other benefits not to mention all this "religious freedom" crap as a guise to not serve people or follow laws.

Bottom line is, even though this issue has been mentioned in this forum and many others, nothing will be done because fixing this issue will lead into fixing many others issues in urban-black communities. Look, I know ATS (and the population at large) HATES hearing about racism. But here we have it directly from the horse's mouth 40 years later that this was EXACTLY that-- a racist policy. Yet whenever blacks call out racism, everyone's eyes roll and they're told "shut up", "slavery was sooo long ago," "what about black on black crime," "where are the fathers," "work harder", "all lives matter" etc. and my personal favorite, "the fact that you bring up race makes YOU the racist."

THIS is why blacks aren't "getting over it" in 2016... because it's still affecting them!!

This is also what bothers me about reading the umpteenth "special snowflake" thread here. Yes I think a lot of censorship going on is insane... however not ALL calling out "-isms" are simply people whining. There are real systemic issues that absolutely need to be addressed, and absolutely need to be called out NOW, not 40 years from now.

The bosses(probably the dem bosses too) were able to pull multiple disparate groups together. They essentially combined the boardroom Eastern establishment Republicans, the so called fiscal conservatives, with Southern evangelical Christians that primarily care about social issues like abortion and gay marriage. They also pulled in the small government and states rights libertarians. To add to that the segregationist Dixiecrats also joined up., they are mostly a vestige of the past however. There's also the so called neoconservatives.

Today's Republican party could effectively be broken into three or four parts. A similar story exists for the Democrats. I'm not entirely convinced that they are equally fractured in terms of membership or independents who lean towards their party. The Dixiecrats are gone. It seems like the remaining factions are the wallstreet Dems(ie. Hillary), the socialists(Bernie) and the middle of the road pragmatists, the FDR Democrats.

The point being is this is not a simple and straightforward argument. There are many elements involved. You might have well stated that Inuits opress people. The system, regardless of party, is not monolithic. It's a big chess game that's orchestrated behind the scenes. The war on drugs is to drug dealers what prohibition was to al Capone.

Certain goals are being realised. It creates crime and division. It also creates hatred.

Mission accomplished for someone.

War on drugs, or "war of drugs"? Everybody knows of the European, especially British opium wars against China and other Asian countries.
So I would guess that Nixon was either lying or deliberately misinformed by the intelligence. The real purpose was not to screw the blacks and hippies, and as a matter of fact the "hippies" are the ones who are running the current western European countries and the main promotors of the "war of drugs"
