It looks like our DDoS protection provider was targeted first, then us with a massive spike in a ridiculous amount of hits.

So, the hackers penetrated two firewalls?
That's why you don't use 'specialized' providers to protect your server, half the people there are prolly not even qualified enough to protect their own servers.
This is a perfect example of wasting money for crappy service...

Just wondering...
Has ATS looked into the possibility that the root cause of the ddos attacks is coming through the banner ads?

Besides banner ads pushing malware and phishing, they have been used in ddos attacks.

For example: www.csoonline.com... article/2986969/application-security/after-pushing-malware-ad-networks-also-used-for-ddos.html

and:www.itworld.com... article/2833169/security/black-hat--ad-networks-lay-path-to-million-strong-browser-botnet.html

It's not the ads. We had an hours-long attack, with continued attempts.

Besides banner ads pushing malware and phishing,

Because of changes at the browser level, in addition to ad-serving tech, that hasn't happened for over five years.
