While US Attorney General, Eric Holder Used Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Birth Name as His Official Email

Former US Attorney General Eric Holder is a huge fan of NBA hall of famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

So much so that Holder used Abdul-Jabbar's birth name, Lew Alcindor, as an alias for his official Department of Justice (DOJ) email account, raising more questions about the email practices of top Obama administration officials, and about the ability of US government agencies to track down correspondence in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

Here is an article, by Vice News, which expose shady government practices in my opinion. The jist of it is, while US Attorney General, Eric Holder used at least three different aliases for email accounts. He is not the only one either. Agency heads all across the Government have been using aliases for some time.

It raises real questions about records keeping and investigations. How much information has been missed because investigators are not privy to these aliases. How many FOIA requests have been missed due to unknown aliases.

It makes it very difficult to read through these emails released under FOIA requests when you don't know who is really who. This info about Holder using Abdul-Jabbar's alias only came out from a FOIA request related to the Senate investigation on CIA torture and CIA spying on members of Congress.

I do not think defenses against spam-mail from the public justify using these aliases without full-disclosure. What do you think?

An e-mail address is world-facing... An alias for an email address, especially for a celebrity-status individual, is highly recommended to reduce spam. Otherwise you would have to own the worlds best spam filter (which we all know doesn't exist).

I don't blame him for using an alias. What should he have used? [email protected] ? That would make the e-mail practically useless because it would be 100% spam. Should he have used something more non-descript ? It would be the same as using anything else...

I don't see a real problem here...

My prime pick here would be [email protected], though. It's representative of so many good puns all around. And because my husband did it for his work email & they let it slide (with much laughing, but it stands) and if it's good enough for regular company emails, it's good enough for gubmint email.
