“If there’s anybody who thinks that somehow the fighting ends because Russia and the regime has made some initial advances: about three-quarters of the country is under the control of folks other than Assad,” Obama said at a press conference after a two-day meeting with Southeast Asian leaders at the Sunnylands retreat in Rancho Mirage, California. "I say that, by the way, with no pleasure. This is not a contest between me and Putin."
Putin’s military campaign in Syria has shifted the balance of power in the country’s civil war toward the Assad regime, with Russian airstrikes pushing back rebel forces after five years of fighting. Putin’s forces have largely targeted opposition fighters backed by the U.S. and Arab Gulf states, U.S. officials have said, rather than the Islamic State terrorists Russia says it is combating. The strikes have powered an offensive by Assad’s military in Aleppo, the biggest remaining insurgent stronghold. Putin’s intervention has also complicated the United Nations-led peace process, as opposition fighters have been reluctant to engage in diplomatic talks while under attack by Russian warplanes.
"If Russia continues indiscriminate bombing of the sort we’ve been seeing, I think it’s fair to say you’re not going to see" rebels accept the cease-fire, Obama said.

Obama’s just spouting rhetoric. Putin, unlike him, did something about Isis. Obama, who history will record, sat on the sidelines while one of the most evil forces in history, ISIS, ran amuck.
It is important to history that Obama be denounced for doing little to stop Isis.
The Russians aren’t saints but they at least stepped up and fought this evil force while Obama just obeyed orders from the sinister evildoers who wanted to destroy Syria.

Vladimir Putin emerged from a rare face-to-face meeting with Barack Obama on Monday night, saying Russia and the US could find a way to work together on Syria, despite deep differences over the country’s leadership.

This is no secret and outside of Assad himself nobody sees Assad taking back Syria, not even the Russians. In fact the problem for Assad is he is leaning on Iran, Hezbollah, Russia, Lebanese Shia militias and now Iraqi Shia militia's. Those forces are not going to stay in Syria forever to prop him up.
The outcome of the foreign ministers' talks in Vienna now suggests that the Syrian government and the opposition should agree within six months on the establishment of a 'national unity' government.
"We would like the Syrian delegations, having started such negotiations, to agree on a union government within six months — a kind of national unity government that will address current issues," the Russian foreign minister said following the talks.

The transition plan also suggests that the unity government will draft a new constitution and in 18 months there should be free elections under the new constitution, which will be administered by the UN.
