Andrew Dice Clay considered racist?

I loved the Dice man back in the day and I remember one particular stand up act in the early 90's when he asked how many black members were in the audience and told them to smile so he could see their white teeth stand out in the dark. I am curious if he had of said that now would it be considered racist?

More than likely, BLM and some Tumblr feminists groups would've had this guy crucified and burned at the stake for some of the stuff he said.

Of course it's racist, that's the whole point of the joke but he's not saying in a malicious way. He's a comic trying to make everyone laugh, including the black audience. He's a dirty comic and nothing is off limits, that's what makes him great.

Comedians are allowed to say that stuff because it's part of their act. The Dice Man, who I thought was great and had a great act, wasn't a real person. He was a character created by the comedian. This is what also lead to his undoing too. Other people couldn't separate the two and it messed everything up for him. Too bad too because I thought he was funny as hell.

dont know if he himself was a racist. most likely not actually.
However
his humor was racist, sexist, ableist, and like every other 'ist out there.

This isnt a bad thing though, humor is a way to explore uncomfortable subjects and stereotypes, accentuate them, etc. I would say he was more bottom barrel comedians, but plenty of women, black, etc who make their entire routine hammering white people, men, etc..and quite often they are hilarious.

I think when there is true animosity behind the words is when things go from poking fun and stereotyping (and in turn, that serving to poke fun at stereotyping...see Cartman from southpark as a perfect example) to actual offensive and disgusting retoric posing as humor.

If Dice performed in front of a group of college students today, he would be labelled as a racist/sexist/homophobe, tarred and feathered, crucified then left to dry out in the village square. PC has become the new inquisition.

The sad part is a lot of comedians today are forced to avoid college campuses like the plague, and you know it has to be pretty damn bad when Jerry Seinfeld, easily one of the cleanest, mild mannered comedians of our time won't go anywhere near them.



I watched a video a little while ago with Dutch comedian Hans Teeuwen, who was taking some heat for making jokes about Islam. His response was priceless.

"Anything that has a status must be allowed to be subjected to ridicule. When that is not possible anymore, you get nasty situations like living in a dictatorship or something. That's why ridicule is important."

I don't know, Daniel Tosh has managed to keep his TV show all these years, somehow. He's says all kinds of offensive things but that's his shtick. It's a fine line comics like him walk but the thing is, he clowns everybody, including himself. That Diceman bit the OP referred to could be taken offensively. Not everybody could pull it off. It's all about the delivery. i.e.: it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

He is portraying a racist macho Italian American.

Ive never really thought he was that funny to be honest.

IMO you have to be more clever with the material to get away with offensive. He comes off as just crass to me.

His shtick? Being overly vulgar, and most famously ( how sad ) taking children's nursery rhymes and putting in bad words....

Basically the comedian for the real life Eric Cartman.

Also, that video of Seinfeld talking about not doing shows at colleges, he's saying it's because nobody laughs at his jokes. The humor doesn't translate anymore.

I say the guy was never funny. Same with Bill Hicks, though. I've never found someone who didn't like his comedy, but I could never finish a special of his.

I used to love Dice back in the day and I'm a black guy. Heck, I recall my parents laughing at him. He offended EVERYBODY which was the point of the character.

I recall seeing Paul Mooney in college 20 years ago. He definitely let the college students have it. They were seriously offended but he absolutely didn't give two shucks. No way in heck he'd be able to perfgorm now.

thats kind of the point because on the surface that type of stuff seems racist and sexist but its not. 99% of the time it is calling attention to these social issues.

having said that the dice man is/was just NOT funny.
he was huge when i was a teen and i didnt think it was funny even then.

imo he was more about his schtick than about the quality of the material.

when carlin died i watched a tribute show to him and i think it was chris rock who said that it probably took carlin 6 months to get the delivery of his material tightened up to the point it was. i just dont see that with dice man.

the best thing about dice man was the terrible 90's movie with terri hatcher called brain smasher.
