Nine soldiers, eight Ukrainians and one Kazakh, were killed while attempting to detonate an ammunition cache in the Wasit province, Poland's PAP news agency reported on Sunday.
It quoted General Andrzej Ekiert, commander of the Polish-led multinational division in south-central Iraq, as saying that a further seven Ukrainians and four Kazakhs were wounded in the incident.
THE acting police chief in the northern Iraqi town of Samarra was assassinated today, a police official said.
Gunmen opened fire on Mohammed al-Badri as he travelled in his car near Samarra, the official said.
US troops said they took control of Samarra in a major offensive in October but rebels were still mounting attacks in and around the town, 100km north of Baghdad.
Brigadier Amer Ali Nayef was shot dead along with his son, Khalid Amer - also a policeman - as they left the family home for work in the south of the city.
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A day after Iraqi civilians were killed in a mistaken U.S. bombing near Mosul, more civilians died in a shooting incident yesterday near Baghdad in which American troops were initially blamed.
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A roadside bomb destroyed a U.S. battle tank patrolling southwestern Baghdad on Monday, killing two American soldiers and wounding four others, the military said.
The U.S. Defense Department said last week that insurgents were increasing the size and power of the bombs they plant as they escalate their attacks before the Jan. 30 election. On Thursday, a roadside bomb hit a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, one of the more heavily armored U.S. military vehicles, killing all seven U.S. soldiers inside and destroying the vehicle.

THE 13-strong team organising elections in Iraq's restive Anbar province said today it had quit after receiving death threats from insurgents bent on undermining the polls.
"We submitted our resignation to the governor yesterday. We have been receiving threats by letters and phone," said Abdel Aziz al-Rawi, who headed the team in the western region where violence is expected to keep many people away from the poll.
Iraq's Independent Electoral Commission has played down reports of mass resignations by electoral officials in Sunni Muslim provinces to the north and west, where insurgents bent on derailing the January 30 poll have attacked polling centres.
