DC bill would pay people stipends not to commit crimes

Unfortunately, 9,000 a year is not enough to live on, felons have a hard time getting hired, and crime pays way better.

I agree with some on here and say the only way to solve this is legalize what should be legal and expunge some records to make people more attractive to employers again.

It occurred to me that paying criminals not to commit crimes is called protection money. In a way, isn't this the same thing?

The declining Roman Empire paid protection money to the barbarians. History tells us that didn't end well for them.

Felons have been SCREAMING about how hard it is to get a job with a record and these morons would rather do this than to legislate who has access to criminal records and for what purpose.

You know, I agree with you on this.

The only exception (for me), would be legit sexual offenses.

So from what I've read so far on the bill. It's 200 people that are viewed as at risk. They have to agree to the program and under go therapy, at the end of it all they get paid some amount that they've not set yet. The $9,000 is how much the CA program gives out. The one for DC has not been set yet, but I'm betting it wouldn't be any less, DC is a pricey place to live.

This literally has to be one of the dumbest things that I have ever seen passed by a city council--and I live outside of Cincinnati, so I've seen a lot of dumb things passed *cough* streetcar *cough*

"The system" is in place a deterrent for crime, and now they want to pay people who ignored the system and committed crimes to not do it again?

How many times does one have to ignore penalties for breaking laws before we realize it's not the motivation to avoid crime that is the problem here?
