AS seven Republican presidential contenders squared off here for the final debate before voters begin winnowing the field, Donald Trump presided over his own, separate rally a mile away in front of a packed house of cheering supporters.

It would be hard to find a more ideal metaphor for the forces tearing asunder the Republican Party.

For months, Trump has chosen to operate in his own political universe, violating the conventional wisdom that governs presidential campaigns, thumbing his nose at conservative institutions ranging from the Fox News Channel to the National Review and advocating policies at odds with party orthodoxy.

Can a fragmented GOP win the presidential election? Will the GOP even bother to nominate Trump?
Can Trump maintain a viable campaign without the support of Fox even if he decides on a write in bid?

Trump’s candidacy threatens to scramble the Republican coalition built since the presidency of Ronald Reagan, one that worked to unite evangelical Christians and other social conservatives, economic conservatives, and military hawks behind a standard-bearer.

As I've stated before....apparently this was Trumps agenda all along. Who benefits and who loses?

I don't think Trump needs any of the mainstream media outlets in his corner. Trump is an entertainer and he commands a broad audience. The news sources need to sell advertising, and Trump is almost always news worthy.

I'm calling it now: Trump will pull out of the race at the absolute last minute, leaving the GOP scattered with no clear frontrunner.

I'd say tearing apart those above mentioned organizations and exposing them as one organized covert group with a joint agenda benefits everyone who values freedom and liberty. Those are all dangerous and tyrannical groups on their own and together only makes them worse. So for that I tip my hat to Trump. He still shouldn't be president but he would make a good saboteur.

Sorry I beat ya to it.
I called it a year ago..
He is, as I have said a Trojan Horse. He is a Demorat, look at his past statements and stand on issues. He was against the second amend. a year ago and now he is all for it...right.
He is as you say going to pull out or destroy from within..

And I'm calling that he'll blame everyone but himself, taking no personal responsibility whatsoever. He's a master of the victim mindset.

Donald Trump is the ultimate political troll.

Even more hilarious: those clowns in the GOP are being made to look like complete fools chasing him around.

I hear folks wanting to blame Trump for the GOP floundering....but seriously, if the GOP could put up a decent candidate, do you really think their voters would be supporting Trump? Its a desparate move being made by people who are completely disgusted with their choices.

IMHO, their whole slate in the past four presidential elections has not been selected from the highest quality members of their party. What we get are oligarchs; wealthy people with enough money to buy media attention. While I have voted for Republicans and conservatives in the past, they've been much more moderate and insightful than the pack that's running now.

If they want to turn the tide around, they need more people like McCain and his stripe. Of course, dear Ted Cruz says that if the Republicans choose a moderate, the moderate will lose to Democrats Apparently "extremism" is the way to go in this decade.

If they can get over nominating rich, self-serving people and instead nominate politicians who can negotiate with others and who don't see themselves as the star in their own personal reality show, then I'll vote for them. But I'm tired of seeing loudmouthed billionaries whose platform is long on wild talk and short on thoughtful policy.

Oh... and I call that even if he loses, Trump will stay in the race, dividing the vote. He may even pull another Ross Perot trick and try to form his own party.

I think I'd like that option -- let the extremists form their own party and get the moderates back into the limelight.

a reply to: Byrd

That is all Karl Rove. He is the one that initiated the entire neocon concept of "move further right and be unabashed about it". Since it won for GW, i guess they are still trying to follow the model.

When McCain had his chance, he put up such a lame attempt....even if he would be a decent choice, when he had his shot he blew it terribly.

I think that the GOP needs to find true conservatism again. Forget the "religious right" notion, and actually find true conservatism, which is more like libertarianism (with a twist). This is where America's head is right now. We want libertarianism with social programs thrown in.
