He was a young guy, in his early twenty's who was dead certain the world is flat.

He had an argument (mostly tin foil hat conspiracy) for everything.

The world is round because we fly, drive, sail in one direction and come back to the same point, id say - compasses are attracted by range so you go in a circle not around a sphere - he'd answer.

What about people and satalights in space taking pictures of a clearly round, spherical, spinning world - hed answer, conspiracy thats just made up stuff to distract us and burn up our tax money for other secret projects.

I never thought id ever meet anyone in this day and age in this civilized world [HEY no one jump on this, we are for the most part civilized!] i would ever meet a true "world is flat" type person.

Have any of you guys run into people like this?

I would guess that he really isn't sincere and he's just screwing with you.

When the evidence doesn't support belief in preconceived notions, just discard it.

"made up stuff", lol.

Sooo, the sun and moon are flat too, like giant coins in the sky, always facing toward us?

Flat earth denizens, stuck in the second dimension. Don't they know that in flat landia there's no up?

Ask him how flat is 'flat'?

Yes I know someone that leans towards this belief and they point out all sorts of things that they believe scientifically prove their point. They almost made it sound like it made sense. What I don't understand about the claim is to what purpose would TPB be lying about this? What do they achieve by making us believe that it is one way as opposed to the other?

Sounds like any other typical conspiracy theorist, except he thinks the world is flat. I never could agree with the theory.

At least he was on board enough to include that secret projects exist and taxpayer money is wasted.

Show him what liquid does in a vacuum.
I'm sure you can a video on youtube.
If someone believes that the world is flat, they cannot believe in space (as we know it)at all.

One of the things he mentioned was when people get lost or never seen again etc, maybe they wandered too far without supplys and died on the far far away un explored parts of the endless flat plane we exist on.

Was he for real? well im a pretty good judge of character in general, so either was a brilliant actor and intelligent joker or he really believed his tripe. I didnt know him, it was just a friend of a friend at a pub one night, just got me thinking how many more out there? [i wouldnt be friends with a person like this, at the end of the evening he said goodbye and that was that, no "oh btw about the world is flat stuff, i was messing around, just pulling your leg"]

EDIT: this was aimed at VP740's responce - i hoped so, but he seemed absolutely certain.

on the internet, there are a lot more of these folks then you might think. I believe the whole thing started as a debate. Somebody picked the side to argue being a flat earth. Sadly, they were very good at debate, and having won, became an internet sensation, and more and more pseudo-science keeps popping up to bolster their side.

Of course asking to see one of the edges that MUST exist for a flat earth to be real seems to quiet them down a bit, you would be amazed at how adamant they really are. Show them a video from space, NASA used CGI, like they always do. It's almost worse then the chemtrail conspiracy.

Frightening isn't it? I was talking to someone the other day who is taking the bait but not quite convinced. A couple more videos should do the trick though.
I'm talking about a woman in her fifties with children.
Are these things common on face book?
If its coming from TV I'm watching the wrong channels.

Actually...I'm binge buying at the moment so I'll bung a few flat earth DVDs in my basket then I'll be better able to comment.
I mean, I might struggle with the science but if they show me some good evidence I'll try not to burst out laughing!
Can't wait

Well, they may say that it is a good excuse to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on a space agency (or many) that doesn't do much of anything except deceive the taxpayer and spending the ill gotten booty on black budget items. I'll say though, I have no idea and will probably never know what shape the Earth is. Personally, I simply don't blank dismiss something because most sheeple say so..

If the earth is flat then you should be able to set up a telescope on a beach in france and use it to see the statue of liberty in new York, since you can`t do that then the earth isn`t flat.

Unfortunately, the Donald does admit the Earth is a spheroid shape and not flat, so that doesn't work in this case, now if you had said is he a Cruz supporter, it may (and I can't sand either of them)

I think it's really, really weird.
I also personally believe that anyone who could truly think that way is a person that I could not have any association with.

I guess i'll have to wait for the 'faked' NASA pics to show up showing you have bumps there instead of taking your word for it

Tell this young man that those who have climbed Everest have seen the curvature of the Earth. Dozens of men can't be wrong...or can they?
