The flare-up between Saudi Arabia and Iran involves far more than another outburst of Shiite-Sunni rivalry, which dates back to the seventh century Battle of Karbala, though no doubt that ancient feud fuels resentment on both sides of this basic Muslim divide. Those who argue that it is no longer relevant are hard put to explain, for example, Sunni violence against Shiites in Pakistan, or long-standing tensions between Sunni and Shiite Arabs in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Nevertheless, it is the competition for leadership in the Middle East in general, and in the Gulf in particular, that is driving Tehran and Riyadh to the brink of war.

It seems to me that US policy has a lot of impact on this region. The administration seems bend on a war in the middle east and will use what ever proxies required to enact that policy. I for one would like to see more transparency in the US government's dealings in the region.

The US gets the tag of big bad wolf for being successful. In reality every world power has tried to achieve what the US has, complete subjugation of the middle east.

Trouble is that if the USA quietly wants a war in the ME there will be repercussions across the region and I doubt Israel would like that very much. We know that Uranium tipped weapons have a terrible polluting effect that lasts a very long time etc.

Unfortunately with knowing how the USA interferes in that region its hard not to think that its invalid somewhere in the mire. I understand the UK is helping Saudi in Yemen, something most Brits had no idea about and I wonder why we have to back Saudi when they are bombing schools etc.

I am sick of the whole ME affair and how its changing the world for the worse, yet no one is being held accountable and those in charge merrily weep over situations that only include their own.

So the US pushing for peace in the region makes the Saudi's upset because they want to dominate the region. That is what that opinion piece is saying while at the same time saying that this rift has been going on for decades. In other words the entire thing is nonsense. Frankly no matter what US policy is, the problem between Iran and Saudi Arabia will remain. They existed long before they ever heard of the US.

it seems to me that the USA-IRAN nuke talks that were partially Secret

back stabbed the Saudi kingdom in a bunch of undisclosed ways

king Salman has hinted that the USA petro-dollar is soon to-be-Defunct, that Saudi will trade in most currencies in the soon future

it seems that Saudi will not be getting any tactical atomic weapons from the USA
as the administration is ambiguous about just Who will be the Big-Dog-on-the-porch in the ME..
Iran-Saudi Arabia-Turkey ???

the Caliphate- Hegemon might instead be a union between Turk-&-Persia with SA getting regime changed by-the-same in under 5 years time

just some future trends outlooks by me

You do realize that Saudi will burn IF they drop the petro dollar. We pull ou tand then pull ou tall of our oil wells and tech they use to get th e oil as well. Stop importing food and fresh water to them as well and blockade their ships from coming or going. That would be the death of the saudi royal family.

Well, of course in case of any war in the middle east it can boost weapon selling and if it does not lead to a war it may lead to cheap oil like what nowadays we are witnessing.
Moreover the tragedy of Karbala is not related to Sunni or Shia. Rather it shows that there are always a group devoted to inhumanity and still they consider themselves religious, like terrorist groups as ISIS, Al-Qaeda, .....
Their mother land is nowadays Saud family and their fathers are foreign countries out of middle east !
