But Mr Lever offered a possible new theory about the animal's unusual skin colour.

The mysterious new crocodile might just be sunburnt, he said.

"This year is a drought year right, so there [are] a lot of crocodiles out there in very shallow water, or completely running out of water, and they do get sunburn," he said.

"And when they get sunburn and they heal, their scales go white, the burnt scales go white."
