When did the US launch cruise missiles over Iranian territory?
This also might be Iran / IRG trying to sink the nuke deal by forcing a US response so Iran can back out of the deal while trying to blame the US.

Actually there was communication although in only 1 direction. Iran announced over maritime radio channels it was conducting live fire drills. Even though they were close there werent in the direction of the military or commercial vessels.
I dont think Iran is stupid enough to launch missiles in the direction of military vessels.
Correct.
I don't have the facts regarding whether they were trying to provoke us, or we were trying to provoke them.
I'll just so that yes, the Iranians are being dicks and deliberately provoking us
Only 23 seconds warning was given before the weapons were fired, according to U.S. Navy Cmdr. Kyle Raines, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command.

No it was an intentional act by Iran to piss off the US by holding reckless missile tests at a 5 minute notice in international waters, which contained civilian vessels as well.
The United States military made the rare announcement Thursday that it had flown two of its most advanced bombers in an "extended deterrence mission" all the way from Missouri to the Korean Peninsula, where they dropped inert dummy bombs, in a move clearly aimed at warning North Korea against further provocations.
Closing that strait would bring the entirety of the world down on their heads, though... I don't think they're that stupidly suicidal. But who knows what the Revolutionary Guard are thinking from moment to moment...? I certainly don't.
