The Great Califorina Earthquake

I remember about 10 years a go people were saying that there was going to be an earthquake that would break california off from the main US. Well it hasnt happen and it makes me wonder how they are perdicting these earthquakes, and why didnt they perdict the one that caused this sunami. Also does anyone know the equitment they use?

So no one can tell me what equitment they use to try to perdict earthquakes! Do they have phyicics come in and burn tea leaves, how do they do it?
