Actually us Canadians use a McMillan 50 cal. Its a bolt action and therefore much more accurate and therefore better than the relatively inaccurate M 82.

My personal favorite sniper story is the sniper/spotter team that had to spend something like 30 hours in the middile of a VC regiment. They were sneaking down the trail looking for their target, and the regiment came walking down the road, so they hid in the tall grass, and the VC made camp around them. They had to lie there without moving at all until they broke camp and moved on.

Whilst I have heard of this (allegedly) longest shot of the Viet Nam war, I read, a long, long time ago, that another sniper made a head shot with a tripod mounted .50 Browning HMG on single shot and the target was a couple of miles away. Nothing remarkable in that, but the shot was taken at night, sighting through a Night Observation Device - Night Owl or similar.
The target was a hard core Main Force VC Commander (like D445 or D446 - something like that). They'd been after this guy for like some 6 or 9 months and just couldn'y get the drop on him from close in.

A mission was mounted by Green Berets or Marine Recon (not too sure what they were called then) who task was to 'spot' this guy. and set up the 'hit'.

They guy took a round in the face whilst being escorted down a trail towards his or a local village supposedly on a recruiting mission.

Incidentally, the 1000 metre shot in Iraq - are we talking about the Brit sniper or something else?

Thats is quite simply an outstanding shot from that range with a 7.62.
Taking into account the shooter was in a combat situation and the pressures that go with that, this sniper must be absolutely stone cold.

Its because they could. Im not in the military, and Im def not a sniper haha, but I did read Hathcocks book.

Supposedly (I believe him, why shouldnt I?) he was dropped off for a solo mission, snuck into this compound through something like 2-3 foot tall grass, patrols were walking past him, then he takes out their commander and gets out of there before the know what happened. This all happened over a span of at least 3 days (been awhile since I read the book). He had to crawl really slow, and he had to crawl only when the window blew, so nobody saw him.

has anyone got more info on the canadians 2 1/5 k bag in afghanistan? also there are some epic 'sniper duel' stories from the eastern front in ww2, them ruskis had the whole 'sniper cult' colt thing goin on! not what ya wanna face if yer a grunt i suspect

i believe hathcock killed a confirmed 96 vc or NVA men during his tours of duty, and of course, that doesnt count unconfirmed

Hitting anything beyond 600m and especially man sized target and on head is pure luck under combat conditions.

Add to that, during OIF, 99% of kills w/ small-arms by USMC were at distances less than 30m and there was few (less than 10) occasions that even their snipers engaged / succesfully hit anybody beyond 300m. There is this official USMC after action report to be found online if somebody wants to challenge what i have taught you on this occasion.

And this is the USMC, supposedly better trained on small-arms than the army etc.

Is most of that from urban warfare or out in the open?

Headshots at 1 mile are standard requirements for UK sniper school.

1050 yards is nothing - impressive with 22LR etc but with 7.62 that's club standard shooting.

UK snipers work to 1500M - presumably with .50 cal

I don't know why there aren't more snipers in the military. It's a very effective technique when you have technological superiority and reliable ammunition supply lines.

Well There arent many snipers in the military because of the demand of a snipers job. I know that the Marines Focus on marksmanship above anything else, but a sniper has a high level of crap that they have to deal with from both enemies and fellow squadmates. For one, the ability to observe and stalk effectively is a special trade that is taught at scout school. Also, The thought of pissing in your own BDU while on a stalk isnt something that will appeal to any sane person. To do this job you have to be able to kill without hesitation. Albeit a woman, man, or Lt. on a crapper, you have to kill it without question. Another thing that will happen to the snipers is the feeling lonliness in both the field and with his squad. While in a squad you can have the kills spread out among the people around you and it has less of a psychological affect on you. Whereas the sniper always knows that he was the one who killed the target and no one else. Among enemies snipers are severly hated, the thought that 2 men, hiding somewhere, can take any of your fellow mates or yourself, has a high level of stress and hate toward those men. In which case, no matter the "rules of war" No sniper will ever be offered quarters by enemies and will usually be tortured to death. This is why there are not many snipers in the military. On a side note, Some snipers also get harassed by other soldiers for not going in "direct" combat like basic infantry, which is why many snipers dont even wear their awards they recieve for snipe/recon missions.
