Re: the Akula-II, the correct name of the class he is referring to is the Project-971 Shchuka-B class nuclear-powered attack submarine (NATO designation: Akula class) -- not to be confused with the older Type-941 Akula class SSBN (NATO des: Typhoon class.) The upgraded Project 971As have the NATO designation Akula-II. I'll use NATO designations in this post.

The Akula class SSN are the most advanced nuclear submarines Russia has ever designed. The Akula-II are basically upgraded derivitives of the original model and have a quieter propultion system.

The Akula's are hardly outdated, but they are not as advanced as the improved LA class of the USN. As is Russian style, the class is continually being upgraded with each sub being unique, newer variants being more advanced. The reported Indian offer would be to fund and collaborate the building of two partially constructed Akulas that have laid mothballed.

I really doubt this deal would go through. India's own SSN project, the ATV, is by reports nearing completion.

The only problem I see with the PLAN is that they lack maritime experience and have not tasted the deep seas as such. Every other accomplished navy
(including france and Australia) has done so..The problem is the USN will not allow that IMHO

It takes time to get things going and gain experience in deep sea waters. We have to solve the America issue and limit their influence so we can conduct excercises and go into deep sea.

We may have the 52Bs and 52Cs and 54s but all those ships only sums up to 9-10 ships, those aren't enough for a modern navy especially one for a big country with a big coast line like China. Even our modern DDGs and FFGs are lacking in some areas like 52Bs aren't equipped with excellent radars and VLS, 54 needs fixing on the exterior and it also needs better radar and a VLS. You can expect those problems to be fixed before China ever mass produce them in 15-20 of each class.
