Ebola: Undetected Spread Into Body Cavities

This thread is about the recent surprises the ebola virus has thrown up , specifically regarding the re-emergence in Pauline Cafferkey this year .

Doctors at the Royal Free Hospital were 'shocked' by the unexpected revival of ebola in Cafferkey months after she had been declared free of the disease . They found a 'pocket' of the live virus 'in her brain' , which caused her meningitis and she nearly died , again.
This followed another case of a former survivor who had ebola still live , 'in his eye' .

So , here's a list of facts , and what we want to know is , how likely is a worst case scenario , if :

1 .Ebola can live , and spread , undetected , inside or outside of body cavities , and in the wider environment .

2. Ebola is extremely infectious , and can infect or live within wild and domestic animals .

3. Ebola can evolve as a virus , and has already been shown to live on without causing disease to hosts , within body cavities , only to spread to other hosts when consumed - ie bushmeat origins ( eg.bats) .

The concern is that with the 3 above facts , in combination , and seen in the light of what has already shocked the experts , ie Cafferkey ,
then we have an _potentially v. serious problem with what has been 'identified' as a an entirely new strain of ebola living in silence within its victim .

This is not a scaremonger thread but we want the thinkers to think on it . Looking back as it was last year , ebola wise , none of us who had concerns about the possibility of ebola becoming extremely dangerous to a normal future , were actually wrong to have those concerns .

This is of concern - detectability . Cafferkey was released having been declared 'clear' of ebola , only to return , not 'clear' of the virus , but about to 1 . Pass it on (?) and 2. Die .
60 'contacts' of Cafferkey were quarantined /screened at the time of her readmission with the disease - news has not followed up this report , but Cafferkey (Pauline) has recovered and been released .

All viruses evolve, and they all can reactivate. No virus will ever leave the body once it enters. The "virus free" means it's not leaving markers in sufficient quantity to be detected. A virus will wait until immunocompromization, and remount an effective attack as it can.

She did return to Sierra Leone prior to the virus appearing again. What you are suggesting is viral reactivation.

I am more inclined to think that the experimental drugs killed the virus but did nothing to increase her immunity. She returned to Sierra Leone and was infected by the virus again.

I was just thinking about ebola today, and ghere is this thread I remember someone had it in their eye, and that lady relapsed..didn't they find it in some guys semon months after he tested negative for the virus.

The link is spot on for this thread , thanks . It shows we are dealing with the unprecedented . So far there doesnt seem to be any conclusive reason why that ebola cannot easily come back , in a form which can spread with little or no detectable signature , and collect into body cavities , perhaps ready to later emerge and infect other zoo hosts , or even kill most of mankind , not that that's what we want .

Re the exnews quote , evd is also associated with spread , months after , but so far only due to 'close contact .'
Let's hope the tiny little blighter called ebola isnt figuring its way round human border security as we speak because it can apparently evade testing entirely , while still carrying a heavy kick .

Researchers from the United Kingdom identified several instances of unconventional transmission of the deadly disease, including a mother who may have passed it to her baby through breast-feeding. In another instance, an Ebola survivor sexually transmitted the virus a month after being released from quarantine. "Close contact with an infected individual is still by far the most common way for Ebola to spread, but this study supports previous research suggesting that the virus can persist in bodily fluids for a long time after recovery,"

Note close contact still main source but it can be passed by semen and breast milk.
