Hi,
I'm having trouble playing videos I've downloaded.
The audio plays fine but the video plays less than half-speed.
My computer seems to play DVDs fine, so I don't know why it struggles with downloads.
It's an old XP machine. That's about as much info as I have.

Please can you point me in the right direction. Do I need to update drivers or something?
If so, which ones and where from?

Cheers

windows media player has settings to adjust "Play Speed" ... as do most media players so I'd check that, but I suspect its your Codecs is messed up and/or you dont have the right type for that video

Codec Packs

A lot of modern video codecs do need a fair bit of pew and probably it being an old XP machine it doesn't have the required to be able to decode the information fast enough.

you can try VLC which is about as good a media player as you can get.

if its a zero cost try and fix it i'd say download lower quality rips from the web or learn how to transcode files

BTW playing a DVD hasn't really needed much cpu pew since the late 1990's when a mid range pentium 3 could handle it

you can always check local freecycle/facebook pages for people wanting to get rid of better stuff for free as well (always look in dumpsters as well near offices)

Thanks for the replies. It seems like you have to pay to use that codec thing. I downloaded it but it started asking for money so I removed it.
Tried WMP and VLC and Showtime and they are all the same.
Do I just need a video codec or new PC?

I use this codec pack. It's free, just opt out of the optional stuff.

a reply to: HexagonSun Max out the ram of the computer. Also update the video card with something that has its own onboard ram.

Thanks again.
I think I better call the tech. That codec thing didn't work. Hopefully the ram isn't already at max. a reply to: Ceeker63

I believe that xp can only recognize 3gb of ram. I could totally be wrong though.

i'd recomend k-lite codec pack, i downloaded it years ago and have never had an issue playing videos.filehippo.com...

except one time, which was caused by virus, in which case try thisfilehippo.com...

That has messed up my computer. It won't even play DVDs properly now!
I uninstalled it and it's not gone back to normal.

I should have just taken it to someone who knows what they are talking about.
How do I get my computer back to how it was?
I tried system restore but that failed

thanks

Try resetting windows media player to be the default player, it will either be in WMP settings or control panel. I absolutely believe that you are having issues, I (personally) have used many versions of klite and never had an issue so I find it odd that it caused this much trouble. Please keep us updated.
