I have just spent about 500 quid on upgrading my PC (OMG liquid coolers on the CPU amazing) to get ready for VR which is going to be the next big thing.
For pc users we have the Occulus Rift and the Steam VR.

I have not decided what unit to buy yet and will wait until they come out to find out.
Anyhow the rift realesed a developer kit for the rift and here are some reaction videos and some demos.

It isn't just gaming though...they are making cameras which film 360 degrees..imagine a camera on this guy.

Imagine a probe on a different planet with one on. I really think VR is going to be huge and society changing.
So you want one?.

as a computer gamer, i always want to see new stuff, and i an about to upgrade my gaming rig to make sure i meet the requirements for it.
But i don't have high hopes for it.
People seem to resist technologies that put an extra "something" between them and the experience
just look at all the "future" tech that has failed, or at least not become standard.
3d tv
nintendo wii or whatever other hand motion sensors
kinect

they ended up being gimmicks at best. and i think VR will end up the same way.
that won't stop me from buying it though because hey, gamers gotta game.

Maybe the porn industry will save it

never going to touch an occulus rift
it was crowdfunded and then the asshole turns around and sells the company to facebook for $2,000,000,000
he also apparently stole the design (and is currently facing a lawsuit) from a hawaiin company who hired him to produce an almost identical prototype for them using their designs

the whole thing is a prime example of the #ed up ways cut throat assholes succeed while everyone who made it possible get left in the dust

yeah # that thing
# facebook
and # palmer luckey

I like how they put in a clip of Virtual Boy for that demo. That thing was ahead of its time.

They've been trying to sell VR for 25 years now. Back in the 1990's, there was a company called Virtuality who made these really clunky headsets that went along with a stand-up booth. Their system ran on four Amiga home computers all chained together.

Nintendo had the Powerglove which was a game controller that could measure the positions of your fingers. It became one of the most popular VR input devices for academics.

For me the best system is a 3D screen with those shutter glasses (nvidia 3D vision). That can play 3D games as well as 3D movies from just about anywhere. My favorite is skydiving: www.3dtv.at...
