And if Trump becomes president God help us all.

The fool deserves to be spit roasted over an open fire until he agrees to stop talking crap. If that somehow seems harsh its because his ideologies and racist abuse is of the same level.

Trump is a distraction. He is the busy hand in a slight of hand trick. He is taking attention away from something / someone else, he doesn't actually intend on being President. Many predicted he will do or say something to get him disqualified at the last minute.
You see, when running for president, being in the spotlight can kill your chances. It increases the likelihood that you will say or do something to upset voters, everyone will notice and judge you when you are in the spotlight. So the safe thing to do is to stay out of the spotlight as much as you can. So that is why you hire someone (Trump) to do nothing but stay in the spotlight, and say and do outrageous things while you have a good campaign when no one is paying attention to you. Then when the time is right, you have that person get disqualified, and you become the next best thing in line.
So I take it you can pick and choose when, and when not to call out those you support

Yes, I can.
Is there something wrong with that?
Sometimes people do well, and other times they screw up. Yes, I get to pick and choose when to make that determination. Don't you?
What did Obama disregard that he should better have regarded?

Today on NPR I was listening to how the other GOP candidates, and the Republicans in general, are backing away....
Not all candidates backed away, Ted Cruz did not specifically oppose Trumps ideas.
Still not sure if this will be enough to discourage stubborn, stupid and rich... will see...
